Childhood friends Mulo Francel and Didi Lowka founded the ensemble Quadro Nuevo in 1996. The adventurous artists have since travelled to countless places from Helsinki to Hong Kong, from the Caucasus to Carnegie Hall in New York.
Due to their daring way of playing music, they won the ECHO twice, a golden Record, the German Record Critics’ Award and several jazz Awards.

With the extravagantly playful accordionist Andreas Hinterseher and the pianist Chris Gall, who shines through lavish inventiveness, they live their music in the here and now. This is reminiscent of four guys who were happily playing music and moving about the southern city squares and fairs. This is what happened in the early days of Quadro Nuevo.

Later they spent time in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, rehearsed for days in the shimmering midday heat, raved in the evening, plunged headlong into the scene, accompanied dancers, intoxicated themselves with heavy wine, caipirinha and fresh Brazilian music directly from the source.

The new album HAPPY Deluxe was released.

Starting from here, the virtuosos set off into improvisational new territory, sometimes swinging high into swirling airs, sometimes diving into Mediterranean sparkling seas, sometimes chillingly spinning in daydreams and night owls.

Many of the ancient tales that continue to inspire us to this day involve epic journeys…

Icarus’ flight to freedom, Jason and his Argonauts, Aeneas’ search for a new home and, of course, Odysseus’ swashbuckling journey.

Globetrotting German group Quadro Nuevo have long been enthralled by these tales of Greek mythology and their latest release brims with stories, adventure and contemplations on power, wealth, luck and wisdom.

You’ll find hymnal improvisations alongside a driven ska groove, a sea Bossanova in early-season 5/4 time as well as a heartfelt lullaby for the fallen Icarus or an earthy ballad for the waiting Penelope.

Planned for months before launching into action, the adventurous collective around Quadro Nuevo, consisting of 30 travelers, sailed through the realms of ancient stories for weeks, via Sicily and the Aeolian Islands, entering the Wild West of the ancient world.

While the 4-piece band brought four other musicians on board for this journey, they were also accompanied by a brain researcher from the Berlin Charité, Homer specialists who speak Ancient Greek, art historians, an adventurous biologist who studies the history of mankind, a crime writer, a yoga master and a range of photographers and culture enthusiasts.

The new album by the world music ensemble Quadro Nuevo is dedicated to the wintry mood. The musicians, who have already released three Christmas albums in their long band history since 1996, do not see December as another work of this genre, but they nevertheless interpret melodies of religious or spiritual origin on it.

“Figures like Jesus, Mary and Joseph were formative for our occidental mindset. Regardless of whether one is a believer, whether one takes them as historical persons or as myths, their story can give us orientation. In the course of life, we can move away from them, lose track of them, reinterpret them again and again and approach them again.

Especially at the darkest time of the year, we reflect particularly intensely. Even Jesus of Nazareth and his disciples do not always agree on the right path. They discuss, argue, deny and betray each other. And in the end, Jesus cries out on the cross, “My God, why have you forsaken me?”
