This is the first studio album of original material since 1995’s Tales From The Punchbowl with the classic Primus line-up of Les Claypool (vocals, bass), Larry LaLonde (guitar) and Tim Alexander (drums). The Desaturating Seven is inspired by a 1970’s children’s book Claypool often read to his kids when they were growing up. The book tells a story of seven goblins one representing each color of the rainbow who simultaneously pull all of the color out of the world.

The definitive Primus line-up Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde, and drummer Tim Alexander – is back together and set to release their first full-length studio set in nearly 20 years, ‘Primus & the Chocolate Factory, due out on ATO Records on October 21. “The idea was to combine the Frog Brigade and Primus, and do this record, says Claypool. I think like a good portion of the planet, we were all pretty put off by the remake of the ‘Willy Wonka’ movie – the Tim Burton version. I really wanted to pay homage to a film [1971’s ‘Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,’ starring Gene Wilder] that was very important to me as a kid and very influential to me musically. So that’s what we did. And as opposed to just going in and recording the songs and playing them the way they are in the film, we twisted them up a bit…twisted them up a lot.”

The recording is about my early perception of the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory film, says Claypool. The notion wasn t so much to go in and redo the soundtrack note for note as much as it was to utilize the classic elements of the music yet try to reflect some of the darker undertones of the Roald Dahl books, because when you read those books, there is an eerie and somewhat menacing aspect implied.

Primus’ platinum-selling third studio album is HiRes remaster from the original analog tapes. Features one of the band’s biggest singles – “My Name Is Mud”.

“Brimming with pop culture references (from MacBeth to Deliverance, Jerry Garcia to James Brown) and boasting a darker tone (murder, suicide, depression), Pork Soda further demonstrated that Primus are more than capable of walking down multiple paths at the same time. Some of their interviews accredit that to the stress of touring for two years on the back of their massive major debut, but Les himself has said that that wasn’t necessarily the case: ‘Pork Soda was the first straight-up Ler, Herb, and Les record. Even Sailing the Seas of Cheese had some songs that Todd and Jay Lane had helped with. It’s a little darker, heavier. That was the beginning of our really DIY recording. We recorded that in our rehearsal space, and we had our sound man do it. That album went platinum, but it took four years. We were always the slow-burn guys; we were the guys called ‘the catalog band.’ We didn’t come out and Pearl Jam-it and sell a gazillion records right out the gate.'” – Consequence Of Sound

“Pork Soda is the exact opposite of what people want from a soda these days. It’s got all the cholesterol, all the calories.” (Les Claypool)

One of the band’s most underrated releases acts as an awesome prologue to the Pork Soda era of Primus. Miscellaneous Debris isn’t anything too comprehensive: a simple, five-song EP completely composed of covers. The material is surprisingly varied ranging from Peter Gabriel to XTC to Pink Floyd, but all of the songs sharing Primus’ love for the quirky and obscure.

The artsy stuff takes precedence over more predictable choices like Rush; essentially, Primus challenge themselves the whole way through. While some songs are a bit too much of a stretch to fit Primus’ identity (Peter Gabriel’s “Intruder” is probably the most out-of-place of the five), the overall song selection is just as against-the-grain as Primus themselves.
