These sonatas date from a high-point in the career of the Czech-born Jan Ladislaus Dussek (1760-1812), at a time when he was established in London as a sought-after performer and fashionable piano teacher. His partnership with the instrument-maker John Broadwood resulted in significant technical developments to the fortepiano which would be imitated abroad and capitalised upon in Vienna by Beethoven, notably the extra power and larger range.

For his fourth release on the Fuga Libera label, the pianist and fortepianist Piet Kuijken, professor at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and the Antwerp Conservatory, presents a programme of music by Ludwig van Beethoven. The starting point of this double album is an artistic approach that is both pedagogical and musical: the first half of the release contains pieces such as the Sonate Pathétique op.13 and the Sonata op.110 performed on a historical piano (a Tomkison original from 1808), while the second invites you to compare this with pieces of the same magnitude – the Appassionata Sonata op.23 and the imposing op.111, amongst others – played on a modern piano.

A text written by the eminent musician invites you to follow the artist’s approach, within the same type of repertory when faced with these two different instruments.

A sensitive and interesting album to help you discover all the different facets of this artist!

Franz Schubert (1797-1827) was an extremely prolific composer, but his entire output for violin and piano represents more than two hours of music. His bold use of tonalities is already evident in the early works from 1816 and 1817, which clearly reflect his admiration for Mozart. The first three are labelled “Sonatina”, possibly intended to appeal to amateur musicians. However, they are highly complex works by the youthful composer. The late works, written in 1826 and 1827 shortly before his death, are characterised by an exuberant virtuosity, and sometimes the piano is treated like a substitute orchestra.
