Rated PG is a collection of Peter Gabriel songs from the movies.

Having always loved the combination of film and music (aged 17 he gave up a place at film school to pursue a career in music) Peter Gabriel’s first opportunity to really marry these twin interests came when he was asked to create the music for Alan Parker’s film Birdy in 1985. Further film work, including his music for Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ (that became the album Passion) and the soundtrack to Philip Noyce’s film Rabbit-Proof Fence (released as the album Long Walk Home), has continued to feed that interest.

This is a mixture of songs that have been written for specific films, and existing songs that found an appropriate place in a story. Originally released in 1982 this was the fourth solo release [also known as Security] featuring the bass & stick skills of Tony Levin and VDGGs Peter Hammill providing backing vocals on three songs.

Co-produced by Peter and David Lord this is the first album where Peter really immersed himself in the music of distant lands and cultures. It was also his first fully digital recording. These two elements created a deeply effective soldering-together of futurism and generations-old tradition. The single Shock The Monkey became Peter’s first top 30 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Peter Gabriel is the third eponymous solo album by English rock musician Peter Gabriel, released on 23 May 1980 by Charisma Records. The album has been acclaimed as Gabriel’s artistic breakthrough as a solo artist and for establishing him as one of rock’s most ambitious and innovative musicians.

Recorded both at his home studio at Ashcombe House, near Bath, and at London’s Townhouse Studios, Peter’s third self-titled album was produced by Steve Lillywhite. The album saw Peter change his writing style; now the rhythm came before the melody and the songs were built up on top of the rhythmic sequences. The album delivered a top 5 UK single in Games Without Frontiers and Peter’s first overtly political song in the shape of totemic closer Biko. It also features notable contributions from Kate Bush, Paul Weller, Phil Collins and David Rhodes.

New Blood is a continuum of Peter’s previous Scratch My Back album – the song-swap project where he covered the songs of others, all to an orchestral backing. Thanks to the precise arrangements by John Metcalf and Peter, the treatment was so successful that Peter very quickly knew where he wanted to take it next, and work began to apply the same principals to his own songs.

Great care has been taken, and much discussion shared, in deciding what songs were included on New Blood. It wasn’t simply a case of giving the big numbers an orchestral re-rub. Indeed, some of the big hits are missing in favour of lesser-known material. But the intention wasn’t a deliberate obliqueness; it was more a case of finding the songs that would be enhanced by the massed strings, brass, woodwind and percussion.

Recorded between October and December 1984 and originally released in 1985, Birdy marks the first occasion that Peter worked with French-Canadian producer and multi-instrumentalist Daniel Lanois who was fresh from working on The Unforgettable Fire with U2. Lanois went on to co-produce the So and US albums with Peter. Birdy is the soundtrack to the Alan Parker movie of the same name – the tale of a Vietnam vet who harbours Icarus-like ambitions to fly – it finds Peter flexing his creative muscles free of any commercial pressures.

This may come as something of a shock to younger readers here, but there was a time in the not so distant past when MTV played these things called “music videos”. These so-called “music videos” were short films used to promote an artist’s latest songs, and when MTV started broadcasting in August of 1981, there’s no denying that there was a primitive, almost quasi-home movie ambience to a lot of what was seen in those early days. (The foregoing is of course said with tongue firmly planted in cheek, for those who can’t easily discern tone in the printed word.) By the time Peter Gabriel’s So album was released in 1986, though, music videos had become decidedly more ambitious, and indeed there were often blatant attempts to push the artistic envelope with any given video outing. Still, probably no one expected Peter Gabriel, then still not exactly a household name and just beginning his mainstream explosion courtesy of So itself, to seemingly take over the airwaves with his inventive and frankly kind of goofy video for his huge hit “Sledgehammer”. As several commentators state in this appealing documentary built around the recording and release of So, many incorrectly thought of Gabriel as a kind of dry, persona-less artist, not realizing that he has an outré sense of humor, albeit one on the understated side of things, as is probably the case with many Brits. “Sledgehammer” was one of the first outright MTV “sensations”, a music video that exploded beyond the bounds of even that (then) music-centric channel and became part of a wider pop culture zeitgeist. It’s still one of the most fondly remembered music videos of all time, and there’s little doubt that it helped put Peter Gabriel firmly on the map as a major bestselling artist. But truth be told “Sledgehammer,” either the song or the video, is but one part of the So puzzle, and this brief but very informative documentary helps to fit all those other pieces firmly into place.

In October 1987 after many months on the road, it was in the elevated surroundings of the hillside open-air theatre at Lycabettus overlooking Athens, that the So tour came to a climactic close. The three nights were filmed in what was the first-ever Peter Gabriel concert to be committed to film. As a concert film, it was brilliantly shot and has now been equally brilliantly remastered, a crystal-clear record of Gabriel and band in their mid-80s pomp. The viewer is placed right in the heart of the action all the way, from the band s synchronised choreography on opening number This Is The Picture , right through to the skin-pricking closer Biko.
