It is one of the best-selling live albums in the United States, and considered by many to be one of the finest live rock recordings of all time. Following four solo albums with little commercial success, Frampton Comes Alive! was a breakthrough for the artist.

Released on January 6, 1976, it debuted on the charts at 191. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 the week ending April 10, 1976, and was in the top spot for a total of 10 weeks. It was the best-selling album of 1976, selling over 6 million copies in the US and becoming one of the best-selling live albums to date, with estimated sales of 11 million worldwide.

Frampton Comes Alive! was voted “Album of the year” in the 1976 Rolling Stone readers poll. It stayed on the chart for 97 weeks and was still No. 14 on Billboard’s 1977 year-end album chart.

At just 21 years old Peter Frampton had already played with The Herd and co-formed and left Humble Pie. So he struck out on his own with the appropriately named, ”Wind of Change.” Freed from Humble Pie’s narrower focus on hard-rock boogie, Frampton’s debut solo album reveals an artist exploring more dimensional, delicate and nuanced songwriting and guitar playing … Frampton showed his own brand of rocking hard with tunes like ”It’s a Plain Shame,” ”All I Wanna Be (is by your side)” and even made a Stones song his own with ”Jumping Jack Flash,” which became a staple of Frampton’s live shows. But these tunes and even the hook-laden ”The Lodger” are balanced with intricate, beautiful tunes like the elegiac ”Fig Tree Bay” and the title track ”Wind of Change.” An auspicious and stirring debut, ”Wind of Change” launched Frampton’s solo career and began the inexorable path to superstardom. Intervention’s Frampton@50 series hybrid CD/SACD reissues are mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering from the best analog tape sources available. Intervention worked for months with Universal’s archive team, scouring the vaults in the US and UK for the best-sounding tapes. Several sets of tapes, including 1970s-era tape copies, were sent to mastering and evaluated by IR’s Shane Buettner and Chris Bellman. The best-sounding tapes are 1/2? safety copies from the 1990s A&M Safety Program. The ”Wind of Change” and ”Frampton” safeties are sourced from UK Production Masters, while the ”Frampton’s Camel” safety is sourced from the Original Stereo Master. These tapes sound sensational, vibrant, detailed and alive. Combined with Chris Bellman’s work at the board, and the superbly transparent mastering chain at Bernie Grundman Mastering, legions of fans will hear what Peter and the band really put on tape during this seminal period. Fans will hear bottom-end authority, dynamics and textural details never revealed on any previous edition. These are the definitive versions of these amazing albums that made Peter Frampton one of the greatest artists of his time!

At the time of its release, Frampton Comes Alive! was an anomaly, a multi-million-selling (mid-priced) double LP by an artist who had previously never burned up the charts with his long-players in any spectacular way. The biggest-selling live album of all time, it made Peter Frampton a household word and generated a monster hit single in “Show Me the Way.” And the reason why is easy to hear: the Herd/Humble Pie graduate packed one hell of a punch on-stage — where he was obviously the most comfortable — and, in fact, the live versions of “Show Me the Way,” “Do You Feel Like I Do,” “Something’s Happening,” “Shine On,” and other album rock staples are much more inspired, confident, and hard-hitting than the studio versions. [The 1999 reissue in A&M’s “Remastered Classics” (31454-0930-2) series is a considerable improvement over the original double CD or double LP in terms of sound — the highs are significantly more lustrous, the guitars crunch and soar, and the bottom end really thunders, and so you get a genuine sense of the power of Frampton’s live set, at least the heavier parts of his set, rather than the compressed and flat sonic profile of the old double-disc version. Frampton and the band sound significantly closer as well, even on the softer songs such as “Wind of Change,” and the disc is impressive listening even a quarter century later. Of course, one must take this all with a grain of salt as a concert document — as was later revealed, there was considerable studio doctoring of the raw live tapes, a phenomenon that set the stage for such unofficial hybrid works as Bruce Springsteen’s Live/1975-85 and countless others.] – Bruce Eder

If you were challenged to name five rock albums that epitomized the ’70s, Frampton Comes Alive! should probably top the list. Former Humble Pie guitarist Peter Frampton recorded a few perfectly fine albums with his band Frampton’s Camel, but it wasn’t until some of those tracks were recorded at a live performance in San Francisco and released as Frampton Comes Alive! that he became a household name. Buoyant pop, sentimental ballads, arena rock–this album has it all. The double-LP package set sales records and contained three bona fide radio hits–“Baby, I Love Your Way,” “Show Me the Way,” and “Do You Feel Like We Do?” This 25th-anniversary remastered package features three previously unreleased tracks from the source shows, plus an additional selection recorded at the time as a radio promo.
