The Paul Winter Consort is an American musical group, led by soprano saxophonist Paul Winter. Founded in 1967, the group mixes elements of jazz, classical music, world music, and the sounds of animals and nature. They are often classified as “new age” or “ecological jazz”, and their musical style is often called “Earth Music”. The group has had many lineup changes since it was founded. Long-standing members currently in the group include Paul Winter, cellist Eugene Friesen, Berklee alumnus bassist Eliot Wadopian[1], jazz oboist Paul McCandless, and percussionist and frame drum specialist Glen Velez. Past members who were part of the group for a considerable length of time include Paul Halley, Susan Osborn, Oscar Castro-Neves, Russ Landau, David Darling, Jim Scott, Dorothy Papadakos, and Rhonda Larson.

Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz was exploring the bossa nova in some of his most successful releases when the Paul Winter Sextet recorded the bossa nova date in this compilation. Getz was a seasoned veteran with an identifiable, fully developed sound. Winter’s group was an assemblage of leading college musicians from the Chicago area. On this 1962 date, the difference in experience shows in the sextet’s tidy, proficient, often faceless performances.

Vinyl | LP Cover (1:1) | FLAC | 24bit/96kHz & 16bit/44kHz
Label: Epic / KE 31643 | Release: 1972 | Genre: Acoustic-Jazz Fusion

Essential: a masterpiece of jazz-fusion music.
Openly I would describe this work as the first Oregon’s LP, under the direction of soprano saxophonist Paul Winter.
Later I’ve heard other Winter’s works, and are geared more toward the New-Age genre.
As for the music on this LP, is so good. That you can hear some of the jazz-ethnic-acoustic fusion.
Another interesting thing we’ve to a Ralph Towner, not only playing guitar… also singing and does quite well! Listen to “The Silence Of A Candle”.
An LP 5 stars.
