Relaxing and heavenly music from the early 17th century for choir and small ensemble by Jacob, Hieronymus and Michael Praetorius. The Balthasar-Neumann-Ensemble and Balthasar-Neumann-Chor (founded by Thomas Hengelbrock) is one of the most prestigious and famous early music ensembles. It can definitely be considered as one of the best groups in the world of early music.

Michael Praetorius can be considered as one of the leading German composers of the early 17th century (The familiar harmonization of “Es ist ein Ros entsprungen“ (Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming) was written by him in 1609).

Pablo Heras-Casado is among the hottest young conductors of our time and leads the world’s best orchestras. He was named Musical America’s 2014 Conductor of the Year and since 2010 alone, he has made a first appearance with nearly 40 orchestras, opera companies, and festivals, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Boston Symphony Orchestra to the Salzburg Festival and more.

Mendelssohn’s first symphonic work scored for full orchestra, the Symphony op. 11 in C minor paved the way for even greater examples of the genre he was soon to produce. The concert overture Die schöne Melusine and the sparkling Piano Concerto No. 2 rely on the type of orchestration and harmonic language which are best served when played on period instruments, as heard here. Devoid of the atmosphere of Romantic doom and gloom, nearly every page of both scores is marked by an exuberant cheerfulness, youthful drive, and irrepressible energy.

From the outset it should be said that this – sumptuous – album of Monteverdi’sSelva morale e spirituale (literally Moral and Spiritual Forest) doesn’t feature the complete collection of some forty titles contained in the master’s last work published in 1640, but rather a carefully minded selection of fifteen titles to provide the broadest possible overview of the various styles as well as melodic and choral genres approached by Monteverdi, with indeed a penchant for the sacred. A complete collection would have required three to four hours… Let’s get to the point: Pablo Heras-Casado’s reading at the head of the Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble is absolutely stunning, allowing ample room for the vocal and instrumental colours (because Monteverdi quite specifically described the instrumentations and alternations between vocals and instruments) and sound layers so specific to the Venetian language. Undoubtedly Heras-Casado has proven to be not only an excellent symphonic conductor, but also that he fully understand the art of vocals and the writing of the Renaissance.

The two splendid works on this album resulted from Manuel de Falla’s encounter with the husband-and-wife team of dramatists Martínez Sierra-Lejárraga: Love the Magician, whose eminently ‘gypsy’ inspiration takes us to the very heart of the flamenco repertory, here magnificently embodied under the direction of maestro Pablo Heras-Casado; and the brilliant pantomime The Three-cornered Hat, for which Picasso designed the sets and costumes – exactly 100 years ago!

The three works on this CD evoke the worlds of commedia dell’arte (Pulcinella), Don Quixote (El retablo de maese Pedro) and picaresque Spain (the Harpsichord Concerto).

Telling their stories with colour, rhythm and humour, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Pablo Heras-Casado and Benjamin Alard (playing a sumptuous Pleyel harpsichord) invite us to an exhilarating firework display.

Four symphonies were enough for Robert Schumann to leave his mark. Without allowing himself to be overawed by Beethoven’s shadow, he succeeded from the outset in coining a highly personal idiom, with an astonishing combination of formal rigour and freedom of inspiration. Pablo Heras-Casado and the Münchner Philharmoniker offer their interpretation of this corpus, more mysterious than it appears, which tells of its composer’s passionate and tormented soul.

In the autumn of 1851 Schumann composed, in rapid succession, the two violin sonatas and, in the space of just seven days from 2 to 9 October, the Piano Trio no.3, Op.110. As always during his work, Schumann was oblivious to everything around him, neglected social obligations, and isolated himself – even from Clara. ‘Robert is working very assiduously on a trio for piano, violin, and cello,’ she confided to her diary, ‘but he won’t let me hear anything of it until he has quite finished it – all I know is that it’s in G minor.’

This trio, like all his other chamber works with piano, was tailor-made for Clara to play and right from the first rehearsal session in the domestic circle she went into a veritable frenzy of delight: ‘It is original, absolutely full of passion, especially the scherzo, which sweeps one away to the wildest depths’, Just a little bit of that same enthusiasm would probably have spared the Violin Concerto a great deal of opprobrium: Clara witheld the score, as did the dedicatee, Joachim. It was finally premiered in Berlin on 26 November 1937, more than 80 years after it was composed, with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Karl Böhm and the violinist Georg Kulenkampff. Yehudi Menuhin had the privilege of making the first commercial recording, produced in the following year, 1938, with the New York Philharmonic under its British principal conductor John Barbirolli.

This first volume in a trilogy comprising the complete concertos and piano trios of Schumann brings together two late and unjustly neglected works. The instigators of the project, Isabelle Faust, Alexandre Melnikov and Jean-Guihen Queyras, champion their cause with a force of conviction and a choice of instruments that restore the delicate transparency and subtlety of their textures. The next release will be of the Piano Concerto and Piano Trio No. 2.

If the shadow of Mozart still haunts Schubert’s Symphony no.5, the Seventh (in no way ‘unfinished’ in the eyes of its creator) already looks far into the future. Pablo Heras-Casado and the musicians of the Freiburger Barockorchester lead us towards that Romantic élan. Their flexible approach, keen and swift in the earlier symphony, making room for shadows and mystery in its successor, meets the challenge of bringing out the contrast between these ‘two Schuberts’, here more audible than ever.

Mendelssohn’s Second Symphony (known as Lobgesang, or Hymn of Praise), was described by him as a “symphony-cantata”; in a similar manner to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, it consists of three purely instrumental movements followed by an extended closing section featuring choir and soloists. It is a piece that often seems to sit in the shadow of that masterpiece of Old Testament storytelling, Elijah.

The opening motif is a tricky one to handle; so simple in its own right, yet the linchpin of the entire work. Here it is subtly phrased rather than declaimed dramatically; Heras-Casado is evidently keeping his powder dry, treating this initial statement as the seed from which the rest of the performance grows.

Beethoven’s five piano concertos relate, in a sense, part of the composers life: some twenty years during which a young musician from Bonn made several revised versions of the first concerto he wrote (a springboard to Viennese success that ended up being called no.2), before becoming the familiar Emperor of music embodied by the brilliant inspiration of no.5. Two hundred and fifty years after his birth, it is with these two extremes that Kristian Bezuidenhout, Pablo Heras-Casado and the Freiburger Barockorchester have chosen to start an exciting period-instrument trilogy of the concertos that bids fair to be a landmark!

After the first two instalments, highly praised by the press – ‘one of the finest, most . . . thrilling performances of [the] Fourth Concerto’, wrote Gramophone – Kristian Bezuidenhout, Pablo Heras-Casado and the Freiburger Barockorchester close their Beethoven trilogy with the classical yet already eminently personal Concerto no.1, and that masterpiece of intensity and drama, Concerto no.3. Once again, period instruments and historically informed performance practice reveal the astonishing modernity that early listeners found in these works!

The inexhaustible strength of a genius: Neither the disillusionment that set in after his exile to the United States nor his declining health stopped Bartók from fulfilling his commission for the Concerto for Orchestra nor from writing the Third Piano Concerto, his final work, intended to secure his wife’s future. Hence his gloomy circumstances led to two masterpieces (and gained him a long-awaited American reputation). They are magnificently served here by Javier Perianes and the musicians of the Münchner Philharmoniker under the direction of Pablo Heras-Casado.

More than a century after the historic scandal of its premiere at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, The Rite of Spring has established itself as one of the “musts” of the modern orchestral repertory. And if the source of the telluric forces generated by Stravinsky lay in pagan Russia, it is beneath the arabesques of the palaces of Andalusia that Péter Eötvös found the inspiration for his third violin concerto, entitled Alhambra. The work’s dedicatees, Isabelle Faust and Pablo Heras-Casado, here present its very first recording.

In later life, Mendelssohn always opposed the use of the terms ‘Scottish’ and ‘Italian’ for his symphonies in A minor and A major respectively, as if to emphasise their qualities as ‘pure’ music. Yet they were directly inspired by his European Grand Tour of 1829-32: from the gloomy ruins of Holyrood Abbey to the sun-drenched landscapes of Rome and Naples, his imagination fashioned masterpieces that have seldom been surpassed for their sense of orchestral colour, vividly brought out here by the period instruments of the Freiburger Barockorchester.
