The second album by “simply magnetic” (Le Monde) Klaus Mäkelä with the Orchestre de Paris from the series of Ballets Russes scores: “Petrushka by Igor Stravinsky. ‘The interpretation of the Orchestre de Paris and its conductor Klaus Mäkelä is undeniable in its virtuosity, conviction and suggestive power … The commanding precision of the rhythm, the verve, the humor inspire Petrushka.” (Les Echos)

“Mäkelä’s gestures are freer and more flexible than ever before, proof of the relationship of trust between this exceptional conductor and an orchestra that has never been so close.” (Le Figaro) On the album, Mäkelä and the Orchestre de Paris also present Debussy’s Prélude à l’Après-midi d’un faune.

This celebrated recording of Saint-Saëns’ Third stands as one of the very few performances to challenge the acclaimed Munch/Boston version on RCA. It features playing of great panache (with a truly high-voltage finale), and if the strings in the first-movement allegro aren’t as tidy as some, Barenboim more than compensates by taking the movement gratifyingly up to speed. The big question for most collectors concerns the remastering, and here I have to say that it strikes me as an unqualified success.

This is Alexander Zemlinsky’s high romantic masterpiece, a symphonic drama-cum-orchestral song cycle that owes something both to his Viennese fellow conductor Gustav Mahler’s ‘Song of the Earth’, and to his pupil Schoenberg’s ‘Gurrelieder’…yet while Schoenberg was looking to atonality and his 12-tone system to design his way out of a 20th century tonal crisis, his teacher went another way, as we hear so clearly in this lushly orchestrated work.

More than a century after the historic scandal of its premiere at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, The Rite of Spring has established itself as one of the “musts” of the modern orchestral repertory. And if the source of the telluric forces generated by Stravinsky lay in pagan Russia, it is beneath the arabesques of the palaces of Andalusia that Péter Eötvös found the inspiration for his third violin concerto, entitled Alhambra. The work’s dedicatees, Isabelle Faust and Pablo Heras-Casado, here present its very first recording.

A successor to Paganini, Henri Vieuxtemps was, in company with Sarasate and Wieniawski, one of the great violin virtuosos of the nineteenth century. These performer-composers have often been accused of possessing an overly showy style, too centred on their own capabilities and inclined to alternate between speed and sentimentality. While it is true that most of their works were written to showcase their own instrumental skills, highlighting a number of technical innovations in the process, it would be unfair to dismiss their music as nothing but spectacular effects and languorous melodies. By skilfully blending a knowledge of the legacy bequeathed to them by their predecessors and a fondness for their respective national folk traditions, Sarasate, Vieuxtemps and Wieniawski all in their own ways succeeded in continuing the virtuoso tradition of expansive passion and exaltation.

Sir John Barbirolli, CH (2 December 1899 – 29 July 1970), né Giovanni Battista Barbirolli, was a British conductor and cellist. He is remembered above all as conductor of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, which he helped save from dissolution in 1943 and conducted for the rest of his life. Earlier in his career he was Arturo Toscanini’s successor as music director of the New York Philharmonic, serving from 1936 to 1943.
