Oliver Schnyder, probably the most promising Swiss pianist of his generation, has recorded the soundtrack to a film by Heinz Bütler about the Swiss painter Albert Anker. A selection of the most beautiful and popular “Lyrical Pieces” by Edgard Grieg is musically set to the multi-layered portrait of the Swiss artist. The film “Malstunden bei Raffael” (Painting Lessons with Raphael) opens up the work, thinking and life of the great Swiss painter for the first time in a cinematic way far beyond the well-known and often clichéd: In “Albert Anker. Painting Lessons with Raphael”, a “room of wonders” is the starting point of the journey through time to Albert Anker (1831-1910). For the studio in the painter’s farmhouse in the Seeland village of Ins is one of the very few artists’ studios of the 19th century that has been preserved in its original state – a spectacular time capsule “curated” by Anker himself with pictures, photos, books, documents, bizarre items, letters and objects of painterly and everyday use.

Brahms composed the first of his three Piano Trios aged 21, then pruned and recomposed it in his late 50s. The Oliver Schnyder Trio’s new Brahms set is different from most in that they include both versions. Indeed, they are ardent advocates for the earlier one, which bursts with youthful vigour but sprawls under the weight of its own ideas, and is by some way the longest work on the recording. The only sleeve note is a letter from Oliver Schnyder addressed to Brahms in which he castigates the composer for what he sees as a lack of self-belief.

Their first grand opus is this timeless recording of Beethoven’s works for piano trio in a special 3CD set. The music of Ludwig van Beethoven is revolutionary and reaches far beyond the time of writing. Beethoven was unique, but at the same time, offered a central point of departure for new traditions of composition. The Oliver Schnyder Trio made their debut at the Zurich Tonhalle in 2012. Their recording of Schubert’s Piano Trios was hailed as “a new benchmark recording” by the magazine Die Bühne and was chosen as Switzerland’s Best Classical Album of the Year by the Aargauer Zeitung.
