Also known as the New York Jazz Trio, this combo is a studio-only group who specialize in recording classic standards in a straightforward, post-bop style. The New York Trio features three gifted musicians who are firmly established on the East Coast jazz scene. Pianist Bill Charlap is a member of the Phil Woods Quintet, has accompanied the likes of Tony Bennett, Benny Carter, and Gerry Mulligan, and has recorded a handful of well-received albums for Blue Note as a bandleader. Bassist Jay Leonhart has recorded as a headliner since 1983, while also making a name for himself as a vocalist and songwriter as well as backing up Marian McPartland, Louie Bellson, Lee Konitz, and many others. And drummer Bill Stewart had handled demanding gigs with a variety of musicians, including jazz guitarist John Scofield, funky sax man Maceo Parker and R&B legend James Brown. In 2001, Charlap, Leonhart, and Stewart teamed up in the studio to cut the album Blues in the Night for the Venus Jazz label; featuring leisurely but heartfelt interpretations of eight classic melodies, the album was well-received by fans of classic jazz. Seven similar collections have been recorded by the trio for Japanese jazz labels.

The New York Trio, consisting of pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Jay Leonhart, and drummer Bill Stewart, have created quite a stir in Japan, as they have entered the studio regularly to record for the Japanese Venus Jazz label at the start of the 21st century. Their sixth CD for the label, Thou Swell draws from the songbook of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, a composer/lyricist combo who wrote many songs that became standards. As a result, a number of these songs have been frequently recorded by jazz musicians and seem in danger of overexposure. But Charlap is a thoughtful arranger, playing “My Funny Valentine” complete with the usually omitted verse that sets up the song while playing it at a very deliberate tempo, resulting in a stunningly different take. The pendulum-like introduction added to the breezy “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was” is fun, as is the lush setting of the infrequently performed “That’s for Me.” Some pieces can’t help but cover familiar ground, but that doesn’t detract from these enjoyable performances.

New York Trio – Love You Madly (2003) [Japan 2016] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

The vast Duke Ellington songbook is always ripe for exploration, and the New York Trio, featuring pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Jay Leonhart, and drummer Bill Stewart, is up to the task. The gorgeous ballad “The Star Crossed Lovers” is in good hands, as Charlap gently examines the facets of this gem, accompanied by Leonhart’s spacious basslines and Stewart’s whispering brushes. The brisk run through “Love You Madly” is transformed into an extended workout instead of the brief versions typically played by its composer. Charlap’s bluesy gospel introduction to “I’m Just a Lucky So-and-So” will turn a few heads. Even though there’s nothing new about tackling “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)” at a racehorse tempo, this trio’s intricate workout is a bit more abstract than most recordings. Charlap’s jaunty treatment of “I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart” suggests its composer’s stride piano roots. Another sentimental journey.

A wonderful gift for jazz fans has arrived from Venus Records! Nobody argues that Bill Charlap is one of the most preeminent jazz pianists of his generation. His encyclopedic knowledge of the American Songbook is second to none, and his beautiful touch, amazing skills and imagination make it a pleasure to listen to him at all times. Ken Peplowski, on the other hand, is without a doubt one of the best clarinet and tenor sax players in the swing tradition. Each of them had recorded a number of albums for Venus Records of Japan separately–Charlap with his great New York Trio (with Jay Leonhart and Bill Stewart) and Peplowski with his own quartet and the Eddie Higgins Quintet. Now, wouldn’t it be nice to put them together in a studio and make an album? Yes, it would, and they actually did it! They are a match made in heaven, and you can hear from the first note of the first song that they are inspired. Peplowski’s supple, rich, and lyrical clarinet and tenor sax playing is simply beautiful, and Charlap’s quietly intense solos are awe-inspiring. Leonhart and Stewart are also given ample room to stretch out and impress, as many of the tunes go over seven minutes. An instant classic and great for fans of straight ahead jazz!

After Bill Charlap was “discovered” by the Japanese independent Venus Records with his wonderful debut album for the label ‘S Wonderful, he signed with Blue Note. Because of the contract terms, Charlap’s name can no longer apper prominently on albums he records for Venus. Hence the anonymous moniker “New York Trio”. But make no mistake. This is Bill Charlap’s trio. And what a trio! Veteran Jay Leonhart’s bass sounds deep, lyrical and authoritative, and cutting-edge drummer Bill Stewart’s surprisingly traditional drumming brings a unique tension to this group. This unusual trio has recorded six albums for Venus Records at the pace of one each year, and this is their first of the celebrated series. One of the best interpreters of the Great American Songbook, Charlap dazzles us with his beautiful touch and tone, faithful rendering of original melodies and subtle addition of modern sensibilities. Selections are mostly medium to slow tempo ballads. As the title suggests, this is clearly music for the night.

For their fifth album on Venus Records, Bill Charlap and his New York Trio took on another songbook. This time it was Cole Porter’s. Begin the Beguine is part of Charlap’s songbook series. Previous entries include that of Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington. When you mix the divine melodies and romantic nature of Cole Porter with this great piano trio that has played together for five years…well, the results are extraordinary. The album begins with the lively “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To”, then goes through the lovely “So In Love”, the surprisingly unhurried “Begin the Beguine”, and ends with the heart-rending “Every Time We Say Goodbye”.
