He recorded over 100 songs that became hits on the pop charts. His trio was the model for small jazz ensembles that followed. Cole also acted in films and on television and performed on Broadway. He was the first African-American man to host an American television series. He was the father of singer-songwriter Natalie Cole (1950–2015).

First issued in the early ’60s, this collection of musical Christmas cheer is packed full of the smoothly sung, sentimental favorites associated as much with Nat King Cole himself as with the season. The singer’s performance of “The Christmas Song” is an unforgettable classic reprised here twice, once in an updated version that includes a contemporary vocal from his daughter, Natalie, and also in Cole’s original 1946 recording. Other traditional religious favorites like “I Saw Three Ships” and “Away in a Manger” are also featured, in a setting that, with its well-arranged orchestral accompaniment, manages to sound both sophisticated and folksy.

Nat King Cole Sings for Two in Love was Nat King Cole’s first album made specifically for the new 12″ LP format. Like Frank Sinatra, with whom he shared a record company and a conductor, Cole made a thematic album with Sings for Two in Love, in this case a set of 12 romantic ballads. But they aren’t actually all for “two in love.” There are songs for two who think “This Can’t Be Love” or that it’s “Almost Like Being in Love,” or who tell each other “Let’s Fall in Love.” And then there are post-love songs — “Autumn Leaves” and “Dinner for One Please, James.” If Cole really is singing for “two in love,” he’s giving them good news and bad. Of course, his plaintive, undisturbed singing makes the happy and sad sentiments seem equally content, and Nelson Riddle’s orchestrations consistently support the singer without challenging him or getting in his way. – William Ruhlmann

Six months after Nat King Cole’s untimely death, Capitol Records issued this compilation LP, which did not bode well for its stewardship of his recorded legacy. Nominally speaking, the album was a collection of tracks from the late ’50s previously released only on singles and EPs, which would have made it, if a minor Cole collection, nevertheless welcome to fans and collectors. But the three songs that had been the biggest hits among the selections, “Looking Back,” “Send for Me,” and “If I May” (all Top Ten records), were not the original recordings, but the re-recordings Cole had done for his album The Nat King Cole Story in 1961. As if that weren’t bad enough, the recordings had had new guitar and percussion tracks overdubbed to give the music more of a contemporary sound, circa 1965. The result of course was a travesty that did not reflect Cole’s musical taste, even on material that was not among his best work to begin with. – William Ruhlmann
