This gem of an album by tenor sax man Stanley Turrentine with vibraphonist Milt Jackson recorded for Creed Taylor’s label CTI in 1972. The backing band has some of Jazz music’s heaviest hitters such as Ron Carter on acoustic bass, Billy Cobham on drums, Bob James on mostly Fender Rhodes electric piano and session ace Cornell DuPre on guitar. This album is typical of what the CTI record label was putting out in the early 70s. In this case the players blend hard bop with slight overtones of soul jazz. The medium tempo tunes swing like mad thanks to the amazing hook up of Cobham Carter and James. This came out after Turrentine’s successful album “Sugar” and if you’re familiar with that album “Cherry” is very similar except with the addition of Milt Jackson’s vibes. They share many of the same backing musicians. The music on Cherry is pretty diverse with an interesting take on Lee Morgan’s tune “Speedball” that opens the album. There are two tunes composed by Weldon Irving who you may know as the composer of the tune “Mr Clean” made famous by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard on his CTI album “Straight Life”.

Originally released as Riverside RLP 407 (mono) and RS 9407 (stereo)

When Wes Montgomery made his first amazing impact on the New York jazz scene at the end of the 1950s, a great many established stars actively sought to record with him. Milt Jackson was one of the few for whom the guitarist felt an equal affinity. For one thing, they shared a strong love for the blues; and Wes had learned, through years of playing with his brother Buddy, to value the vibes/guitar sound. To support this memorable meeting of thoroughly compatible jazz masters, Riverside assembled one of the most cohesive recording rhythm sections of its day: Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Philly Joe Jones.

The music on Wizard of the Vibes features Milt Jackson with the Thelonious Monk Quartet in a 1948 session combined with a 1952 date with his bandmates from the Modern Jazz Quartet (at that time including John Lewis, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke) along with alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson, who was oddly credited as the leader of the date on the original release, though it clearly seems to be Jackson in charge. The chemistry between Jackson and Monk on classics like “Misterioso,” “Evidence,” “I Mean You,” and “Epistrophy” is immediately apparent, although Kenny “Pancho” Hagood’s vocals on the standards “All the Things You Are” and “I Should Care” remain an acquired taste. Jackson introduces three originals on the latter session, including the debut of his highly acclaimed “Bag’s Groove,” which has long since become one of the most celebrated and popular jazz compositions. Lewis’ uncanny musical ESP is evident throughout the session, as he feeds Jackson imaginative lines for his improvisations. Donaldson is enjoyable at times but doesn’t always play at a level equal to the rhythm section, resorting to rather run-of-the-mill ideas in some of his improvisations. Milt Jackson’s inventive playing throughout both dates makes this an important CD in his considerable discography, so it should be a part of any bop fan’s collection. –Ken Dryden, AllMusic

Milt Jackson’s third album for CTI – part of a wonderful run that really helped him redefine his sound in the 70s! The album’s got the electric approach you’d expect from the label – a great change from the sound of Jackson in the Modern Jazz Quartet, and a surprisingly great setting for his wonderful work on vibes! Milt’s laidback style is perfect for the CTI mode – open, flowing, and filled with great tones – matched up here with sax work by Jimmy Heath, bass by Ron Carter, piano from Cedar Walton, and drums by Mickey Roker – a perfect setting to let loose in a way he rarely did on his earlier albums. The whole set’s great – and titles include “Lost April”, “Rerev”, “The Metal Melter”, “The Steel Bender”, and “I’m Not So Sure”.

Bags & Trane is an album credited to jazz musicians Milt Jackson and John Coltrane, released in 1961 on Atlantic Records, catalogue SD 1368. Taking its title from Jackson and Coltrane’s nicknames, it is the only collaborative record by the two men, although only Jackson contributed original compositions. In actuality, the album belongs in Jackson’s discography, as he was the session leader and still signed to Atlantic under the auspices of the Modern Jazz Quartet, and not in that of Coltrane, who had left the label for Impulse Records at the time of this album’s first issue. However, like Prestige Records, as Coltrane’s profile grew after he had stopped recording for the label, Atlantic released them with Coltrane’s name more prominently displayed.
