Alexander Zemlinsky composed his Lyric Symphony, Op. 18 for soprano, baritone and orchestra during his time as musical director of the New German Theatre in Prague, where he had moved in 1911 from Vienna. It was generally regarded as his corresponding equivalent to Mahler’s Lied von der Erde and is based on Nobel Prize laureate and most important representative of modern Indian literature Rabindranath Tagore. The work is combined with the befriended and three years older “phantasmogorist” Franz Schreker’s Prelude to a Drama, which is a version of the overture of his Die Gezeichneten. It might be considered symptomatic for the most notable characteristic of Schreker’s music: the dominance of chordal sounds over the melodic element.

Composer Pierre Bartholomée was also conductor. The art of combining instruments therefore has no secrets for him. The disc gathers works from the 1970s and 80s, and features remastered recordings and an unpublished score that has just been recorded during summer 2017: the opportunity to rediscover the interpretation of Michael Gielen at the head of the a magnificent Frankfurt radio orchestra in Harmonique, a piece inspired by extra-Western music. The richness of the timbral combinations gives the work a rhythmic density from which brilliant colors arise. Then, this orchestral effervescence leaves room for more transparency. The programme also features a more intimate piece by Pierre Bartholomée, his saxophone quartet entitled Ricercar. Considered too difficult in its time, the score had not been recorded. Bl!indman sax quartet has finally done it. The four musicians released it with ease and displayed its shimmering harmonies with a pleasure and a joy that make forget its formidable virtuosity.

Despite all the differences in the musical language of the works by the Polish composers Karol Szymanowski and Krzysztof Penderecki included on this recording, they are united by their quality as a lament: Szymanowski’s Stabat mater, completed in 1926 and based on a Polish translation rather than the original Latin text of the medieval poem, is still considered one of the most important contributions to 20th-century music.

5th instalment of the Michael Gielen / ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna series on Orfeo. What makes Olivier Messiaen’s œuvre so special is, to a great extent, his ability to coalesce various influences, inspirations, and convictions into a wholly individual and perfectly coherent musical language. This includes the development of the modal harmonies of earlier centuries as much as it does an engagement with rhythms from non-European traditions. The wealth of colors in his works stems, in part, from Messiaen’s synaesthetic ability to perceive chords as various shapes and colors. As an enthusiastic ornithologist, he spent much time in nature, notating birdsong and then working those, in stylized form, into his compositions. But most importantly, Messiaen’s work is governed by his profound faith. Messiaen once said of himself that he didn’t primarily see himself as a composer but as an “ornithologist and rhythmist”. Captured in 1991 and 1996, remastered from original ORF archive tapes.
