Maxim Emelyanychev and Il Pomo d’Oro continue their uncommon Mozart symphony cycle. The idea is the following: put together great symphonies of the late Mozart and youth pieces. Maxim Emelyanychev, who has already gathered the first and the last symphonies – the beginning and the end –, has chosen to record the symphony no. 29 and the legendary no. 40 in the present volume. The ensemble makes us follow Mozart, from Salzburg to Vienna, in the yearning for liberty his life was. Perfectly suited to this repertoire, Maxim Emelyanychev uses the exceptional and period-instrumented sonority of Il Pomo d’Oro to deliver a dramatic and powerful Symphony no. 40, while rendering all the lyricism and contrasts of the no. 29. The Oboe concerto, interpreted by the soloist Ivan Podyomov, first oboe at the Royal Concertbouw Orchestra, adds a concertante supplement to this programme.

Following their much-praised Schubert recording (‘the most thrilling account of Schubert’s last symphony’, BBC Music Magazine), Maxim Emelyanychev and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra are reunited for their highly anticipated second album on Linn, this time performing Mendelssohn’s Symphonies Nos. 3 & 5. Inspired by the natural beauty of Scotland – and what better way to celebrate SCO’s 50th anniversary in 2023 than the ‘Scottish’ Symphony! – No. 3 has a fiery character well suited for the ‘dynamic, energetic and exciting to watch’ conductor Maxim (The Guardian). Despite its numbering, No. 5 (known as the ‘Reformation’) is an early work which evokes the struggles and triumph of Protestantism. Its final chorale based on Luther’s much celebrated ‘Ein feste Burg’ draws the album to a reaffirming end.

Joseph Haydn’s piano trios are among the most harmonically adventurous of his works in any genre, often reaching into remote keys via enharmonic modulation. This album presents a selection both from the composer’s early trios and later efforts, which reflect the composer’s full musical maturity and are greatly admired by critics.

When the composer Sergey Akhunov discovered the ground-breaking book of 1947, “Jazz”, by Henri Matisse – a collection of prints of his colourful cut-paper collages – he was struck by its almost surreal nature, and he conceived the idea of composing music with the title “Jazz”, but which, like Matisse’s book, has nothing to do with jazz. That inspiration finally took shape when Julia Igonina and Maxim Emelyanychev commissioned him to compose a work for them. The result was Jazz, a cycle for violin and piano: fifteen miniatures, bearing titles taken from the prints in Matisse’s book. On this new recording, those pieces are brought together with two French masterpieces of the 1940s by Messiaen and Poulenc (whose favourite painter was Matisse), performed by Julia Igonina and Maxim Emelyanychev on period instruments – violin with gut strings and a magnificent 1908 Blüthner piano (part of the collection of the Piano Museum in Rybinsk).

After a first exciting solo disc of Mozart’s Sonatas on the fortepiano, Maxim Emelyanychev now holds the baton in a symphonic program.

The young conductor was recently appointed head of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and a new wind of freedom is blowing in two major scores.

In Beethoven’s so often recorded Eroica Symphonie, he knows how to enhance the rich thematic palette and the variety of timbres. His insatiable curiosity galvanizes the Nizhny Novgorod Chamber Orchestra. His unlimited imagination combined to the use of natural horns and trumpets devilishly refresh the interpretation of this masterpiece.

This promising young musician – former conductor of the ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro and Currentzis’ favourite continuist – then visits Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn with as much greed and sensitivity. A most awaited release!

Like Stein’s fortepianos, the copy of a Walter and sons (a Viennese fortepiano once owned by Mozart) played here by Maxim Emelyanychev is equipped with a knee lever, the ancestor of the damper pedal. No doubt Mozart was inspired by the timbres, the dynamic and harmonic possibilities of this new instrument: the Fantasia in C minor that starts off this album highlights this orchestral − almost operatic − range, and in its profusion of themes, it express the most prominent contrasts, reaching great expressive density. The same accents can be found in Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor, K. 457, while the Piano Sonata No. 16 in C major, K. 545 offers a dramatic respite. This “small sonata for beginners” was composed in 1788, preceding the “Jupiter” Symphony, also in C major: a beautiful gem, coming just before his monumental work. Its innocent melody revives childhood memories of the first piano lessons. Finally, the Piano Sonata No. 18 in D major, K. 576 was created as the first part in a cycle: “Six easy piano sonatas for Princess Friederike”. Composed in 1789, and in fact considered to be of great difficulty, it was Mozart’s last sonata. Anton Walter, the piano maker, started making a name for himself in Vienna in 1778. Like most inventors, he never stopped experimenting: while other workshops produced pianos at scale, Walter kept looking for “his ideal”; each instrument differed from the previous one in numerous details and ever-bolder additions. In total, he built around seven hundred instruments; here, Emelyanychev plays on a copy made by Paul McNulty, a great specialist of fortepianos and ancient pianos, with experience in manufacturing close to two hundred copies of instruments from Stein, Walter, Hofman, Graf and Pleyel.

Maxim Emelyanychev’s affinity with Mozart is well known, especially when it comes to piano works. In 2018, the conductor and keyboardist treated us to a recording that not only displayed his virtuosity and musicianship, but also revealed his remarkably close understanding of the composer’s music. Today, the symphonies are the focus of his first long-term project with Il Pomo d’Oro, an ensemble he has been working with as it’s conductor since 2013. As he points out, this project, aiming eventually to provide a complete set of the Mozart symphonies, is unlike anything he has recorded with the ensemble hitherto on period instruments. The approach here is original: each volume will feature an early symphony by Mozart, together with one of his great mature symphonies, which will enable the listener to perceive his many facets, revealed in the course of his development. Each volume will also include a bonus work, featuring a special guest. Inaugurating the series, Maxim Emelyanychev himself provides the hors d’œuvre with Concerto o.23 K.488, played on a fortepiano, before going on to conduct Mozart’s Symphonies Nos.1 and 41.This is a new, unopened CD in its original packaging.

This is clearly a treasure trove of forgotten opera arias . . . an accomplishment that seems near effortless. Blurring the traditional gender stereotype his androgynous tone adds invigorating and adventurous elements to these focused and impeccably controlled performances — so full of life. There is a striking purity to the counter-tenor’s dusky timbre together with a steadfast technique . . . The quality of each aria is consistently high and I have selected several highlights. Praiseworthy is Porpora’s quick and exciting “Quel vasto, quel fiero” from “Polifemo”. Cencic in decisive form as the heroic Ulysses demonstrates his aptitude for the technical challenges. In the title role the tender and affecting love song “Dal suo gentil sembiante” from Leo’s “Demetrio” is an excellent example of Cencic’s lovely smooth line with some modest ornamentation and a gloriously fluid glide to his high registers . . . There’s a vivid presence to the sonics of this satisfyingly balanced and admirably presented recording. Lovers of Late-Baroque opera and the counter-tenor voice will be in their element. Those new to this repertoire need not hesitate. Max Emanuel Cencic is in magnificent form with these high quality, yet inexplicably forgotten, arias.
