Whether “Der Mond ist aufgegangen” or “Es klappert die Mühle”, whether “Der Mai ist gekommen” or “Schlafe, mein Prinzchen” – when you hear the titles of these folk songs alone, you immediately have the corresponding melody in your ear and the lyrics in your head. After all, generations of children have grown up with these catchy songs, and even as an adult, one likes to be touched again by the timelessness of these songs: “Folk songs seem to correspond to a kind of primordial tone of the human soul,” finds the German master pianist Martin Stadtfeld.

He, too, grew up with many folk songs, of course, and as the father of a child, he has been increasingly occupied with folk songs again in recent years. So he had the idea to arrange 30 of his favorite songs (and those of his son) for piano himself and record them for Sony Classical.

Martin Stadtfeld und Bach gehören zusammen. Alle seine hochgelobten Bacheinspielungen waren Bestseller- bei diesem Komponisten hat der mehrfache ECHO-Klassik-Preisträger immer etwas ganz Persönliches zu sagen. Das Album ‘Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern’ widmet Stadtfeld dem jungen Johann Sebastian Bach. Benannt ist die CD nach dem gleichnamigen berühmten Orgelchoralvorspiel, welches eines der frühesten Werke im Bachverzeichnis ist und welches von Stadfeld selbst für Klavier bearbeitet wurde.

Mit der Toccata und Fuge in d-Moll und der Passacaglia in c-Moll (BWV 582) hat Stadtfeld zwei der berühmtesten Werke Bachs für Orgel gewählt und diese für sein Instrument, den modernen Konzertflügel neu bearbeitet.

Eine weitere reizvolle Entdeckung bietet Stadtfeld mit dem mehrteiligen und selten zu hörende Cappriccio ‘über die Abreise des vielgeliebten Bruders’, von Bach für Cembalo geschrieben. Die Chromatische Fantasie und Fuge BWV 903 von Bach in Köthen für Cembalo oder Klavier geschrieben galt schon zu Bachs Zeiten als ein herausragendes Meisterwerk. Die CD schließt mit dem Stück ‘Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten’ des deutschen Komponisten Stefan Heucke.

Über die Hälfte seiner CD-Einspielungen sind dem großen Johann Sebastian Bach gewidmet. Nun hat Martin Stadtfeld eine neue CD ausschließlich mit Werken von Robert Schumann aufgenommen, zweifellos den zweiten Favoriten unter seinen Lieblingskomponisten. Und noch dazu einen, in dem er zahlreiche Bezugspunkte zu Bachs Kunst erkennen will. Es mag ein wenig überraschen, dass sich Stadtfeld – wie er persönlich äußerte – ausgerechnet beim großen Klavierkonzert a-Moll des Romantikers auch an manche Solokonzerte von Bach erinnert fühlt. Abgesehen davon, dass Schumann die Werke Bachs ja ausgiebig studiert hat und bewunderte, ist sein Konzert mit dem Verschmelzungsprinzip des Solisten mit dem Orchester und der frühromantischen Orchesterbesetzung allerdings viel eher zum Inbegriff des romantischen Klavierkonzerts geworden. Dass Martin Stadtfeld in Schumanns Klavierkonzert aber auch viele kammermusikalische Züge erkennt, hört man bei dieser Aufnahme mit dem großartigen Hallé Orchester Manchester unter Sir Mark Elders Leitung an zahlreichen Stellen heraus. Immer wieder geht es Stadtfeld um Kontemplation, Transparenz und klug aufgebaute Steigerungen.
Den Zyklus „Kinderszenen“ op. 15 nahm Martin Stadtfeld im SWR-Studio Kaiserslautern in Koproduktion mit dem Südwestrundfunk auf. „Schumann bildet“, so meint der Pianist, „in den Kinderszenen gerade die kleinen Prozesse, die sich in unserer Seele abspielen, sehr fein und sehr genau ab.“

Following his successful Handel album, Martin Stadtfeld releases “Piano Songbook”, his first album entirely with his own arrangements of themes from well-known classical works, as well as ten short “piano songs” of his own. On the one hand, the album contains 20 short pieces that refer to well-known melodies of classical works, among others by Bach, Mozart, Handel, Vivaldi, but also by Dvorák or Beethoven. “It is exclusively my own heart music, but it goes straight to the heart of many people,” says Martin Stadtfeld. Whether Handel’s “Zadok the Priest” (the football Champions League anthem), arias from Bach cantatas or from Purcell “Didos Lament”, whether melodies from Beethoven’s “Eroica” symphony, a piano quintet by Dvorák or the “March of the Priests” from Mozart’s “Magic Flute” – in his free arrangements, which are deliberately kept short, Stadtfeld has in each case made a particular character of the original work the starting point for his compositions: “With my arrangement, I want to bring out the core of the melody, to offer music that is easy to understand and simple, that touches and in which we can all find ourselves with our own emotions.«

On his new Album, pianist Martin Stadtfeld presents a personal selection of Beethoven piano pieces to coincide with the Beethoven year 2020. “My Beethoven” was originally created as a” supplement ” to a children’s radio play production. Out of the great joy of recording Beethoven’s music arose the desire of all those involved in the production to hear the recorded music “unopposed” and standing alone. Intuitively, Martin Stadtfeld had probably chosen the works and individual pieces for the radio play, which Beethoven is particularly close to him.

Für seine erste, sehr erfolgreiche Aufnahme mit Klavierkonzerten Mozarts hat Martin Stadtfeld von der Presse großes Lob bekommen. Jetzt widmet er sein neues Doppel-Album dem jungen Mozart. Zwei »Salzburger Klavierkonzerte« hat er mit dem Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg unter Mozart-Spezialist Ivor Bolten eingespielt: das erste Klavierkonzert KV 37 des 10-jährigen Mozart (von 1766) und das lange als »Jeunehomme« bekannte Klavierkonzert Nr. 9, KV 271, welches 10 Jahre später entstand und als erstes Meister-Konzert gilt. Für beide Konzerte schrieb Stadtfelld neue Kadenzen. Eine Entdeckung ist die auf der zweiten CD zu hörende Musik aus dem »Londoner Skizzenbuch« des erst 9-jährigen Mozarts, die am Ende einer Europareise des Wunderkindes von 1763 bis Ende 1766 entstand, an deren Ende ein 15-monatiger Aufenthalt in London stand. Dort entstanden die Skizzen, die Mozart wohl ohne die regelmäßige Hilfe seines erkrankten Vaters anfertigte. Stadtfeld hat die »magische Schatzkiste« dieser Londoner Skizzen geöffnet mit »Musik, die aus dem genialen Kind einfach so herausgesprudelt ist, nur seiner Lust und Eingebung folgend und uns direkt zu Herzen geht«. 36 Miniaturen, die das ganze Genie zeigen.

Handel Variations is a collection of Stadtfeld’s very own favorite works by Handel, all newly arranged for and played on the piano. Stadtfeld himself says “I must confess that I find it hard to listen to a whole Handel opera or oratorio in large numbers. Nevertheless, I am convinced that individual “taken out” arias can unfold their effect and aura without their original emotional background. Maybe especially on the piano, which basically remains an abstract instrument.” The album contains Handel’s most famous melodies and hit arias such as “Lascia ch’io pianga” and “Ombra mai fu” as well as the famous “Sarabande” in new and unique piano versions and many more beautiful melodies.

German pianist Martin Stadtfeld recorded a special Christmas album featuring well-known Christmas melodies such as “Stille Nacht” (Silent night), “In the bleak midwinter” and “Maria durch ein Dornwald ging” and “Vom Himmel hoch” which are newly arranged by Martin Stadtfeld himself for “Christmas Piano”. In addition, Stadtfeld contributed to “Christmas Piano” his own pieces, especially the eleven-part contemplative piano cycle “Christmas Time”, two variations after Praetorius’ “Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen” and two intermezzi after Praetorius’ “Vom Himmel hoch”. Already at the end of 2020, when no concerts could take place due to the pandemic, Stadtfeld had sent short musical Advent greetings to his audience via social media channels to cheer them up. The experience of this sharing and the positive response to his music gave him the idea for his new album. Right at the beginning, Stadtfeld’s “Christmas Time” sounds, consisting of 11 atmospheric miniatures. Titles like “Happy Time”, “Wish List” or “Anticipation” conjure up images of joyful anticipation and shining children’s eyes during Christmas times. Just as in his own piano cycle, Martin Stadtfeld let’s listeners participate in his Christmas imagination in his arrangements of traditional carols and pieces by classical composers. “Christmas Piano” also includes “Canonische Veränderungen über Vom Himmel hoch” (Canonical Changes on High Heaven) by Johann Sebastian Bach arranged for piano and trumpet, in which Martin Stadtfeld’s brother Stephan also makes a guest appearance on the trumpet.

Begonnen hat die Laufbahn von Martin Stadtfeld mit einem Klavier vom Räumungsverkauf. Schon mit sieben Jahren steht sein Berufswunsch fest: Konzertpianist. Früh erkundet er die Regeln und Geheimnisse von Kontrapunkt und Harmonielehre; als Jungstudent kommt er in Frankfurt in die Klasse von Lev Natochenny. Es beginnt die Zeit, in der Stadtfeld bei Wettbewerben für Furore sorgt, er gewinnt Preise in Paris, in Bozen – und in Leipzig. Den dortigen Bach-Wettbewerb kann Martin Stadtfeld im Jahr 2002 als Gewinner des ersten Preises für sich entscheiden.

Martin Stadtfeld’s career as a pianist began with a piano from a clearance sale. At the age of seven, his career aspiration was already clear: concert pianist.
