In the mid-’50s, composer and pianist Martin Denny combined lounge jazz, Hawaiian music, Latin rhythms, bird calls, and then-exotic ethnic instruments like, koto, gamelans, and Burmese temple bells into the sound known as exotica. Although the craze was short-lived, Denny recorded several popular instrumental albums and hit number four in 1959 with “Quiet Village,” one of the most unusual top ten singles of all time.

Aloha, hep cats. A question: what do blockbusting novelist James Michener, Fifties America’s most influential newspaper columnist Walter Winchell and John Sturges, director of The Magnificent Seven, have in common? Answer: They all wrote sleeve-notes for the albums of ‘exotic sounds’ released by Hawaiian-based band leader, composer and arranger Martin Denny. ‘Martin Denny’s music is becoming so famous’, wrote Sturges on the cover of the 1958 classic Quiet Village, ‘it’s a little pointless for me to tell you how wonderful it is. If you’ve already heard it you know, and if you haven’t, stop reading this right now….put on the record and play it’ For, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the ‘exotic sounds of Martin Denny’ took Cold War America by storm. Denny released 37 albums for Liberty Records, which sold over 4 million copies. In 1957, his first LP, Exotica, hit number one in both the Variety and Billboard charts, and the single taken from it, ‘Quiet Village’ (which appeared again the following year on the eponymous album), made number two. A rash of releases followed.

Exotica is the first album by Martin Denny, released in 1957. It contained Les Baxter’s most famous piece, “Quiet Village”, and spawned an entire genre bearing its name. It was recorded December 1956 in Webley Edwards’ studio in Waikiki (not, as often reported, the Aluminum Dome at Henry J. Kaiser’s Hawaiian Village Complex). The album topped Billboard’s charts in 1959.

Forbidden Island was the third album by Martin Denny. The album was produced in March 1958 at the Liberty Studios in Hollywood, following the group’s nine-month gig performing at Don the Beachcomber’s Bora Bora Lounge in Hawaii. Forbidden Island was Denny’s first album to be recorded and released after vibraphonist Arthur Lyman left the group to pursue his own solo career. The album includes four original compositions by Denny: “Cobra”, “Exotica”, “Primitiva”, and “Forbidden Island”.
