Classical masterpiece: Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt were both piano virtuosi of the highest order. So it’s no surprise to find that their concertos were composed as vehicles for them to flaunt their digital wizardry — though the two masters strutted their stuff in very different ways. Chopin adored the bel canto operas of Bellini and Donizetti, and both his concertos are like extended operatic scenes in which the piano acts the role of the prima donna, and the pianist is required to play the music with a limpid, singing tone and supple phrasing. Liszt’s performances were much more of a spectacle; supposedly, his bravura displays had similar effect on women as Elvis Presley’s gyrating hips would about a century later. In his Concerto No. 1, the pianist must thunder up and down the keyboard as well as dazzle in dizzying flurries of notes. In both concertos, the orchestra is there primarily to provide a solid, ornamental frame for the soloist. Martha Argerich’s playing probably would have knocked the socks off of Chopin, Liszt, or any other 19th-century virtuoso, for that matter. She can thunder and dazzle with the best of ’em — and she does so thrillingly in this performance of the Liszt Concerto. She also plays Chopin with melting beauty, which is perhaps one reason why this recording helped to gain Argerich a cultlike following.

The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra are not only an internationally-acclaimed touring orchestra but also a symbol of tolerance and understanding between people. Their Prom opens with Jörg Widmann’s riotous overture Con brio, which uses fragments of Beethoven’s Seventh and Eighth Symphonies and looks at them through a 21st-century prism. Orchestra and conductor are joined by the legendary Martha Argerich. Argerich, gives an “unforgettable performance” of Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 dazzling the audience with “her playing as frighteningly precise as it has always been.” (The Guardian) For the encore, the two childhood friends join forces at the piano for a four-handed rendition of Schubert’s Rondo in A which ”for 12 minutes provided a glimpse of paradise” (The Standard), holding “6000 people spellbound” (The Times). The concert is completed with popular excerpts from Wagner’s Tannhäuser and The Mastersingers of Nuremberg – both of which feature a song contest at their heart – as well as from Götterdämmerung, the final instalment of Wagner’s Ring. “Proms don’t come more stellar than this! Daniel Barenboim and his West-Eastern Divan Orchestra would have comfortably filled the hall on their own, while Martha Argerich could have filled it three times over.” (Independent)

Seiji Ozawa is not only a world-famous Japanese conductor, but also a founder and director of the Saito Kinen Festival Matsumoto, home of the Saito Kinen Orchestra, which in 2015 was renamed the Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival (OMF). In this all-Beethoven program, Ozawa conducts the popular Beethoven Symphonies Nos. 2 & 7, performed with his fellow colleagues of the Saito Kinen Orchestra.
In 2015, the commemorative first year as OMF, Seiji Ozawa conducted Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 for the first time in 15 years. In 2016, he conducted Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in Matsumoto for the first time in 23 years.
In addition to these two performances, bonus content features rare footage from the Celebrating Seiji at 80! Gala Concert. A total of 300 top-class musicians gathered from around the world on September 1, 2015 to celebrate Festival Director Ozawa’s 80th birthday. The centerpiece of this concert, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, is included in the extra. This rendition performed by pianist Martha Argerich, who appeared as a friend, and an array of soloists including Nathalie Stutzmann and Matthias Goerne, greatly delighted everyone in attendance. Choral Fantasy was not part of Argerich’s repertoire thus far and this will be the first release ever as footage. There is also valuable footage of Ozawa being serenaded with Happy Birthday by all and blowing out a birthday candle. (more…)
