Whiskey for the Holy Ghost is the second solo album by former Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan. The album builds upon the roots music foundation that Lanegan had established with his debut The Winding Sheet. Released during the grunge explosion of the early 1990s, Whiskey for The Holy Ghost showcases Lanegan’s growing maturity as a songwriter and vocalist.

The recording was reportedly a frustrating affair for Lanegan; at one point the singer had to be physically prevented from throwing the master tapes into a river by producer Jack Endino. Despite the album’s slow gestation and Lanegan’s notorious substance abuse problems, the songs on Whiskey for The Holy Ghost sound remarkably cohesive. Lyrically, Lanegan continues to delve into the darker side of the human experience on songs like “Borracho” and the Biblical “Pendulum” (“Jesus Christ been here and gone, what a painful price to pay”).

“House A Home” was released as a single with an accompanying video. “The River Rise” was used in the 1996 grunge documentary Hype!, where it accompanied a montage filmed at the vigil following Kurt Cobain’s death. Dan Peters of Mudhoney plays drums on “Borracho” and “House A Home.”

The Winding Sheet is Lanegan’s first solo work and showcases his adept skills as a lyricist and his deep, soulful voice. Highlights include “Mockingbirds,” “Ugly Sunday” and the haunting “Wild Flowers.” The late Kurt Cobain lends vocals to “Down in the Dark,” and for the folk classic “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” Cobain contributes guitar and vocals and Krist Novoselic plays bass. Nirvana would later also cover “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” on their Unplugged album. The album was produced by Jack Endino, Lanegan, and Johnson.

As he continues to release albums, Mark Lanegan increasingly becomes a lone wolf, always wandering off to experiment with new things or aggressively change gear. After Blues Funeral in 2012, the old singer for Screaming Trees has reentered the solo game no longer content with his years among Queens Of The Stone Age or his (sublime) duos with Isobel Campbell. Straights Songs of Sorrow shows us again how kaleidoscopic his art can be. Here we are met with contemporary grunge, electro rock, austere blues, unusual folk and shamanic ballads. Led as always by his charismatic, baritone voice, his 2020 offering is, for the first time, entirely autobiographical. Fifteen songs inspired by his personal history as told in his memoir, Sing Backwards And Weep, released alongside the album.
