This album contains three works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, two of which can be considered among the most popular in the history of music. Für ihr neues Aufnahmeprojekt hat die Warschauer Philharmonie mit ihrem musikalischen und künstlerischen Leiter Andrzej Boreyko den polnischen Cellovirtuosen Marcin Zdunik eingeladen. Auf Polish Music for Cello and Orchestra präsentieren die Künstler vier Kompositionen.
Was haben die vier für diese Aufnahme ausgewählten Werke für Soloinstrument und Orchester gemeinsam, abgesehen vom Cello, dem gefühlvollsten aller Instrumente, das uns in den Händen eines Virtuosen in Erwartung jeder kommenden Note den Atem anhalten lässt? Nun, sie sind auch dadurch miteinander verbunden, dass sie von Komponisten polnischer Herkunft geschrieben wurden, die im zwanzigsten Jahrhundert lebten und die meisten von ihnen in derselben Stadt geboren wurden, in Lodz (mit Ausnahme von Henryk Hubertus Jabłoński, der persönlich und beruflich mit Danzig verbunden ist). In einigen der Werke sind auch deutliche und bewusste Inspirationen aus der polnischen traditionellen Musik zu hören. In dieser interessanten Auswahl finden sich sowohl Werke von bekannten Künstlern – Grażyna Bacewicz und Aleksander Tansman – als auch weniger häufig aufgeführte Kompositionen von Jabłoński und Miłosz Magin, die sicherlich unsere Aufmerksamkeit verdienen.

Bach Stories explores a new way of thinking about classical music and improvisation; it presents historical music practice in a contemporary form. This double album from Warner Classics bears the fruits of a friendship and collaboration between two young but already much-awarded musicians. Aleksander Dębicz (piano) and Marcin Zdunik (cello) combine virtuosity and musical drama with the sheer joy and freshness of music-making in a unique programme of chamber works by Bach and improvisations inspired by those works.
These improvisations – in a classical style rather than jazz – create a bridge between two periods, bringing Bach’s music closer to the modern ear by using new means of expression. The ‘Stories’ evoked in the title could be a simple idea, a fleeting memory or a labyrinthine drama. “Bach’s music stirred and inspired our imagination, evoking both simple associations and complex narrative schemes”, explain the musicians.
