Lucinda Williams’ music has always drawn a great deal of inspiration from Tom Petty’s rock. It is not outlandish then that the queen of americana would dedicate an entire album to the musician who passed away in 2017 and would have been 70 the month this tribute was released. Celebrating their shared Southern heritage, Runnin’ Down a Dream: A Tribute to Tom Petty kicks off Lu’s Jukebox a series of studio concerts transmitted in livestream and whose revenues go to various clubs and concert halls closed during the pandemic. The setlists sees Lucinda slalom through Petty’s entire career, delving into albums as diverse as Southern Accents, Damn the Torpedoes, Full Moon Fever, Wildflowers, Echo and Highway Companion. Her interpretations are carried out in a head-on and unsullied manner. Ray Kennedy’s lively and no-nonsense production gives the record a certain vigour that was lacking in some of Tom Petty’s studio versions. Like Runnin’ Down a Dream and its sharp rhythms that shoot off like an electric race car at 200 miles an hour. With her famous carefree singing style and her inimitable gut-wrenching voice, Lucinda Williams seizes each and every one of these songs, taking them on a wonderfully eventful journey. – Marc Zisman

Talk about timing! Though she obviously did not see it coming, Lucinda Williams’ latest release perfectly captures the shared experience of a world in the grip of a global pandemic. Early on in “Bad News Blues” she asserts, “Bad news hangin’ in the air/Bad new layin’ on the ground/Bad news walkin’ up the stairs/Bad news all around” and the hues remain bleak later in “Shadows & Doubts”: “Yeah these are the dark new days/That much is true/And there are so many ways/To crush you.” With much of it set to spare, dirty blues/electric folk backing tracks courtesy of her ace road band led by guitarist Stuart Mathis, her pique and fury make for the most tuneful and best crafted set of tunes in her oeuvre, certainly some of her most heartfelt and direct.

Charles Lloyd & The Marvels + Lucinda Williams – Vanished Gardens (2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

No need to have the same musical tastes to appreciate each other’s cuisine… The proof of this truism can be found in this collaboration between a revered queen of alternative country and a respected old sage of modern jazz: Lucinda Williams and Charles Lloyd, a one-day couple supported by a five-star cast of musicians in which we find guitarist Bill Frisell, pedal steel master Greg Leisz, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland… Both Lloyd and Williams have previously lead a revolution in their respective fields. Here, the duo are celebrating a certain idea of America with an open-minded repertoire. A heterogeneous menu mixing jazz, blues, country and rock’n’roll, with Williams only singing on half of the ten tracks. Vanished Gardensoffer up Jimi Hendrix (Angel) as well as Thelonious Monk (Monk’s Mood) and Roberta Flack (Ballad of The Sad Young Men), though they also include some of their signature dishes (three by Charles Lloyd and four by Lucinda Williams). This is, above all, a refined and profound album; the work of two musicians who know how to digest well decades of music. – Marc Zisman

In 1992, on the cusp of her 40th birthday, Lucinda Williams recorded a remarkable fourth album: Sweet Old World. A perfect treaty of country rock crossed with blues, which reaffirmed her status of Queen of Americana, a status she would again confirm in 1998 with her masterpiece Car Wheels on a Gravel Road… 25 years later the songwriter from Louisiana had the amusing idea of recording the whole Sweet Old World again, renamed This Sweet Old World for the occasion. Surrounded by guitarist Stuart Mathis, bassist David Sutton, drummer Butch Norton and, on the steel-guitar, the great Greg Leisz (who also worked on the 1992 album), Lucinda Williams allows us to marvel once again at the handling and content of these incisive songs but with a more contemporary sound. With a few alterations to lyrics here and there and changes made in the track listing, this reinterpretation is nicely complemented by a few original titles.
