Berlin-based Swiss experimental art-jazz singer Lucia Cadotsch is a respected bandleader in contemporary jazz and this new album on Heartache sees her present her new quartet. It includes UK pianist and organist Kit Downes and bassist Phil Donkin as well as drummer James Maddren and is a tenth full length that builds on the success of everything that went before. Kurt Rosenwinkel is a topper guest who brings his sublime guitar skills to both ‘Medusa’s Champagne’ and ‘Bitter Long Lying Leisure’. Between them, they cook up tight grooves and lavish jazz soundscapes that sure do soothe the soul.

Berlin-based Swiss vocalist Lucia Cadotsch returns with her celebrated Speak Low trio for their second album, released by We Jazz Records on 27 Nov. “Speak Low II” features Cadotsch on voice, Otis Sandsjö on tenor saxophone and Petter Eldh on double bass, and introduces guest artists Kit Downes on hammond organ and Lucy Railton on cello. “Speak Low II” picks up where their genre-bending and forward-looking debut album left off, introducing new shades into the band’s sound and also diving even deeper into the songs they tackle. What makes Speak Low special is their approach to really get to the heart of each composition with seemingly minimal means, yet generating a sound which is both instantly recognisable and remarkably impactful.

Remember the name Lucia Cadotsch – you’re going to be hearing a lot of it. Cadotsch is a young, Zurich-born vocalist who possesses a classical clarity, a folk singer’s simplicity, and an appetite for performing very famous songs (Moon River, Don’t Explain, Strange Fruit) in the company of two edgy free-jazz instrumentalists, who flank her sedate progress with split-note sax sounds and spiky basslines and percussive strumming. That might sound like a merciless deconstruction of fine songs, but in this compelling trio’s hands the process is remarkably melodious and illuminating. Speak Low is delivered with phlegmatic gentleness as saxophonist Otis Sandsjö’s looping ostinato gets increasingly windy and raw, and Strange Fruit is stalked by multiphonic sax growls and swiped, twanging bass chords. Cadotsch is as light-stepping and dolefully swinging as Madeleine Peyroux on Some Other Spring; low-key on Moon River, as if the very thought of the rainbow’s end is wearisome. It’s all eerily beautiful.
