Mauro DAlay was a virtuoso violinist and composer from Parma who acquired great fame and fortune throughout Europe. A contemporary of Vivaldi who praised his musical skills, DAlay held official positions as a musician, first in Parmas Cathedral and then at the Spanish court of King Philip V, whose wife Elisabetta Farnese gifted DAlay the famous San Lorenzo Stradivarius in 1718, which he kept until his death. Now largely forgotten, this ambitious and dynamic composer wrote sonatas, cantatas and concertos. This album features the 12 Violin Concertos, Op. 1 published in 1725 composed in the Parmesan style, but with Venetian influences and presented here in a world première recording. Parma born violinist Luca Fanfoni recorded these concertos adhering to the instrumentation indicated in the score: principal violin, first violin, second violin, viola, cello and organ. Ensemble Reale Concerto (which counts among its members Fanfonis wife and children) recorded this album during lockdown in 2020.

Luca N. Stradivari (1993) is a composer and pianist of his own music. After he graduated at the University of Nottingham, he started to hold composition seminars and concerts in China since 2018. He writes: “The first part of this release is marked by the performance of The King is Dead – shipwreck for violin and piano. A reworking case for duet – Luca N. Stradivari on the piano and Luca Fanfoni on the violin – of the concert for wind orchestra and violin solo based on the First World War, performed in 2012 in Salò on lake Garda for its annual music festival. Seven years later, maestro Fanfoni and I began a long process of studying my work in order to understand its complex rhythms and sonorities, as well as its symbols and deep historical meaning. The movement’s titles (Mad Earth’s screams, Lazy Hell, Stars shot into memories) were taken from some poems of mine in order to better emphasize what the music is describing within a particular section…Paciugo84 is a stream of consciousness running through different frames: absurd imagines, erotic fantasies, impossible loves, all orbiting around the initial thematic idea, those four melancholic notes opening and closing the score turning it into a true madhouse of butter-files.* To elevate the power of this piece I inserted in the recording a soundscape of city noises and turn them into active part of the composition since when I was creating this piece I was reading Sartre’s writings, whose diaries were inspired by what he could see from his window. The music changes and reacts depending also on external noises such as the departing car at the end of the composition becoming a whole with the melancholic ending.”

Pietro Antonio Locatelli was one of the most admired and influential violinist-composers of the 18th century. The summit of his achievement is L’arte del violino, Op. 3, twelve concertos for violin, strings and continuo, each of which contains two sizeable cadenzas that Locatelli called Capricci – bravura pieces independent of their concerto context. Greatly developing chord and arpeggio techniques and full of double-stops and string crossings, they are the most demanding violin works ever composed before Paganini’s own Capricci, which may well have been influenced by Locatelli’s example. Parma born violinist Luca Fanfoni has made several recordings for Dynamic. The recent recording of the 12 Concertos Op. 1 by Mauro D’Alay was praised by MusicWeb International: ‘Luca Fanfoni is a skilled player with a silvery tone’. Luca Fanfoni plays on a violin made by Gioffredo Cappa (Saluzzo, 1690).
