Bach’s English Suites are entitled in a way that is as strange as it is hard to explain, at least at first glance. Contrary to what one might assume, these works are more closely related to French suites than to English music. The title is taken from the inscription “Fait pour les Anglois”, found on a manuscript owned by Bach’s youngest son. In addition to an extensive prelude and four traditional dances – Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue – each suite also contains “gallantries”, lighter dances that were fashionable at the time. In these dance movements, grace and melody play together with a compositional artistry that elevates them far beyond incidental music for courtly dances. After the Partitas published by Passacaille in 2021 (PAS 1105), Lorenzo Ghielmi, one of the most renowned Bach interpreters of our day, now releases the English Suites, recorded on a harpsichord built by Detmar Hungelbert after an instrument by Michael Mietke (ca. 1710 in Berlin).

The catalogue of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works numbers 1128 works, although he actually composed many more than that: a quantity of works have unfortunately not survived to the present day. Some works have also survived in an unfinished form, either because Bach himself did not finish them or because part of the manuscript has been lost. This recording presents all of Bach’s organ works that have survived as fragments; I myself have provided them with completions. Not an easy task, to say the least, but I have tried to adhere to Bach’s style, knowing only too well the impossibility of imitating such a supreme artist. This notwithstanding, it is at least now possible for us to hear and appreciate works that had to a great extent been forgotten.

With this recording, violinist Mayumi Hirasaki, who has been Concerto Köln’s concertmaster since 2011, explores the chameleon-like possibilities of her instrument: when playing with scordatura, instead of the usual fifths interval between the violin strings, an alternative is used in which at least one string is tuned to a different pitch. This results in completely new sonic and harmonic possibilities, which Mayumi Hirasaki presents in works by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Biagio Marini and Giuseppe Tartini, among others – sometimes highly virtuosic, sometimes dance-like or cantabile. The colourful continuo group includes Lorenzo Ghielmi (harpsichord), Christoph Urbanetz (viola da gamba), Michael Freimuth (lute, theorbo, baroque guitar) and Johannes Loescher (violone).

The Monteverdi contemporary Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) is now unfortunately almost exclusively seen as an important and influential composer of works for keyboard instruments, but he also composed both sacred and secular vocal music throughout his entire creative period. The Italian Lorenzo Ghielmi and his ensemble La Divina Armonia show in their recording with PASSACAILLE that sacred vocal music is no less important and in connection with his organ works even results in a particularly charming program. La Divina Armonia was founded by Lorenzo Ghielmi in 2005. All the musicians involved in the Italian group have distinguished themselves for many years in the performance of Baroque music as soloists and musicians in several of the most renowned ensembles in this field. In La Divina Armonia theyre coming together to play music from the Baroque up to the early Classical period, playing extraordinarily vividly, but in a beautifully cantabile manner at the same time.

In the German village of Rysum, in East Frisia, a precious instrument is preserved: an ancient organ, built in 1442/1513, which still has most of the original pipes. Lorenzo Ghielmi and the vocal ensemble Biscantores present a sort of “organ Mass”, where organ pieces and liturgical chant alternate according to the practice of the time. A journey between the late Middle Ages and the dawn of the Renaissance – this is how you could describe this musical programme, set up in collaboration with the musicologist Konrad Küster, which perfectly illustrates the unique sounds of this instrument.

With its recording of Handel organ concertos Op.4 (PAS944), the ensemble La Divina Armonia under Lorenzo Ghielmi impressively demonstrated that they can add new tunes to well-known standard repertoire, which requires interpretative taste, superior technology and exceptional natural musicality. The musicians prove that they have all of this in abundance with their recording of three Bach concertos which experienced a makeover by the performers, without distorting the works.

An active harpsichordist, organist, and musicologist, Lorenzo Ghielmi wears many hats as a recitalist, scholar, and founder and director of the early music ensemble La Divina Armonia. An authority on the works of Girolamo Frescobaldi and Milanese composers of the 16th and 17th centuries, Ghielmi has also pursued research into Baroque organ building and written scholarly studies on the music of the era. Ghielmi was the organist at the Basilica di San Simpliciano in Milan, and from 1992 to 1994 he played a series of recitals devoted to the complete organ music of Johann Sebastian Bach. He has taught at several institutions, including the Accademia Internazionale della Musica in Milan and the Hoschule für Musik in Lübeck, and additionally given lectures and master classes around the world. Ghielmi plays the harpsichord in duets with his brother, Vittorio Ghielmi, who plays the viola da gamba. In 2018, Ghielmi released Frescobaldi: Organ Works and Motets on Passacaille, featuring the voices of La Divina Armonia, as well as solo performances on the Antegnati organ in Peglio. – Blair Sanderson
