A cloudy sky and raindrops beating on the window: this itself is practically music, and for centuries, the sound of rain from the clouds has inspired not only painters but also poets and composers. On her debut GENUIN release, violist Karolina Errera and her piano partner Lilit Grigoryan present a selection of highly emotional music from John Dowland to Benjamin Britten. The prizewinner of numerous international competitions has placed a wide range of original works and arrangements on the program of this album – moving works that are best suited by both the warm sound of viola and piano, as well as the playing culture of the two interpreters!

Award-winning Armenian pianist Lilit Grigoryan explores the art of the variation in her new recording with Orchid Classics entitled VARIATIONS SERIÉUSES. In stunning interpretations combining both virtuosity and integrity, Lilit Grigoryan takes the listener on a journey through this art form, from Busoni’s breathtaking re-imagining of the majestic Chaconne from J.S. Bach’s D minor violin Partita, to Beethoven’s 32 Variations, which range between extreme technical difficulty and expressive moments of quiet simplicity, to Mendelssohn’s grand Variations sérieuses. Alongside these giants of the repertoire are some more rarely-heard gems: Bizet’s sinuous and innovative chromatic variations, and youthful late-Romantic colour from Polish composer Szymanowski.

Following the success of her Orchid Classics debut, Variations sérieuses, Lilit Grigoryan returns with an album devoted to the hypnotically beautiful Música callada by Spanish composer Frederic Mompou, hailed during his lifetime as the successor to Debussy. Mompou’s Música callada (meaning ‘Quiet’ or ‘Silent Music’) was published in four volumes between 1959 and 1967; his final burst of solo piano music and one of the greatest achievements in the Spanish piano repertoire. The concept of ‘silent music’ comes from the Spanish mystic, St John of the Cross, whose writings inspired Mompou as he composed these pieces. The result is a collection of exquisite miniatures of varied colours and mesmerising depths, performed with nuance and sensitivity by Lilit Grigoryan. ‘An assertive and beyond-her-years performance from the Armenian pianist.’ BBC Music Magazine on Variations sérieuses on Orchid Classics.
