The Apple Drop is the 10th studio album from Liars. Recorded in Australia with avant-garde jazz drummer Laurence Pike and multi-instrumentalist Cameron Deyell, mixing their raw, organic live instrumentation with Angus’s solo tinkering at the computer, resulting in an album that blurs boundaries between the archetypal band structure and experimental electronics. The album feels distinctly and recognisably Liars, yet also fresh and singular. Rich textures overlap with engulfing ambience, before giving way to eruptive blasts of noise, crackling electronics and thrashing drums.

The case of Liars is in line with the cover of this TFCF: most improbable! What’s more, each album released by the experimental band has strictly nothing to do with the previous one. In a time when blending and fusion of genres are one of the strongest trends, the Liars always seem to beat their colleagues to the punch! And the 2017 vintage pushes this even further with, for instance, an acoustic guitar appearing out of nowhere during a usual noisy bazaar. Yes, you read that right, a simple six-string folk guitar! This doesn’t prevent TFCF keeping one foot in a more or less punk electro style… But, more than anything, this eighth studio album is marked by the absence of Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross who jumped ship, leaving Angus Andrew alone on board. What  was once a quartet from Brooklyn has now become the solo project of an Australian who moved back down under… But he does really well for himself! The usual 100% Liars collective craziness is still there. The only difference is that Andrew seems to rely on slightly more classical song architectures. But only by a smidgen… We come out of TFCF (standing for Theme From Crying Fountain) with the impression of having crossed a country in which the laws of gravity don’t exist anymore. A mad no man’s land, anything but formatted…

Mess is Liars 7th album. This follow up to 2012’s WIXIW is an angry, ecstatic, primal burst of ritualistic synth-rock that sacrifices self persecution for potent, purposeful abandon.Liars’ career has seen the band rattle through pigeonholes in an attempt to avoid them all together: brittle yet taught punk funk; liminal no-wave; ecstatic noise-pop; 21st-century garage rock; post-millennial post-rock; delicate electronics; reaching here, where Angus Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross now find themselves.

In hindsight, it’s possible to hear some of the profound loneliness of Liars’ next album TFCF and the disorienting washes of Hemphill’s subsequent work as Nonpareils in this score, and for that reason alone, 1/1 is more than just a commissioned work as much as any one release from this band could, it sums up their approach and points the way forward. In some ways, it feels like a more subdued, mostly instrumental version of Mess, one where they cycle through moods and shift textures but rarely heighten them beyond their initial parameters. Still: setting mood has always been one of Liars’ strengths, even if 1/1 feels more like a curio than an essential part of the canon.
