On her album “Winter”, harpist Lavinia Meijer combines compositions by Max Richter, Philip Glass and Nils Frahm, among others, to tell a story about this unique season and how it is being changed by the climate catastrophe. The album, released in February 2024, also contains two of Lavinia Meijer’s own compositions and collaborations with violinist Nadia Sirota, the vocal ensemble Wishful Singing and the Alma Quartet.

Lavinia Meijer developed the concept for “Winter” based on the piece “Open Window”, which she had already written during the production of the previous album “Are You Still Somewhere?” in winter 2020. She directly associated the “cold” of the pandemic-related lockdown and the resulting alienation in society with the season and the effects of climate change on nature. As a result, she began researching and collecting works on the subject. This resulted in a total of 18 pieces.

On the past few years harpist Lavinia Meijer and bandoneón player Carel Kraayenhof have met several times on festivals and concerts. On the stairs of the artist café at Carré Amsterdam the idea popped out: ‘Let’s sit together, play a bit and see if we can come up with a concert repertoire.’ The concerts that quickly followed that idea were a great success and most of them sold out. Thus the idea of recording a live album together. “In Concert”, was recorded on the 7th and 9th of September of this year at Tivoli Vredenburg (NL).

It’s been a while since someone has issued harp recitals that have consistently captured the public imagination, but harpist Lavinia Meijer has shown strong programming instincts in albums that have done just that. Voyage (the title referent is pretty general) is an excellent example. After recording several albums for Channel Classics, Meijer was signed to Sony and released an album of works by Ludovico Einaudi to popular acclaim but mixed critical reception. Here she has threaded classical and crossover styles together very nicely, mixing standard-fare harp arrangements of the likes of Clair de lune and Satie with selections from the Amélie soundtrack of French composer Yann Tiersen. From Satie to Tiersen, Meijer says, is a “short step.” Maybe, but many listeners will experience the Tiersen pieces as moments of relaxation, of clarification of the denser textures and significations of the French repertory pieces. There is no doubt that Tiersen is an evocative melodist, and Meijer brings out the film’s slightly nostalgic flavor of romantic comedy. Recording the harp is engineering’s black belt, and those worried that Sony would not be able to match the legendary sonics of Channel Classics can set their minds at ease: Meijer’s harp has a startling presence, and the balances in the pieces with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta are excellent. The booklet, featuring artwork by Jeroen Krabbé, is another plus. Strongly recommended.

This double album includes the theme of Koyaanisqatsi and 10 Etudes by Philip Glass. Lavinia: “This tribute album is about the effect Glass’s music has on me and his influence on the younger generation composers. His music connected me to the younger generation of composers of today: Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds and Ellis Ludwig-Leone. They all have been influenced by Glass and created their own musical language. You will hear music of these wonderful composers as well on this album!”

My first encounter with Philip Glass in 2011 was truly one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. As a harpist I feel greatly privileged to have such new experiences – not only on stage, but alsobehind the scenes. Collaboration with composers is an important aspect of this, and new ideasnot infrequently arise through personal encounters and mutual inspiration. This was certainly thecase when I met Phil, who had never before heard his Metamorphosis live on the harp. After myinitial nervosity, tension soon melted away when I played the opening bars and he remarked “thatsounds beautiful!”.After this special encounter, I looked into other pieces by Glass that could be played on theharp. I had heard him play the Opening Piece from ‘Glassworks’ himself, a very beautiful piece inits seemingly unending interchange between the two hands. The film music for The Hours was amore tricky challenge. After examining the original score and the piano version I came to theconclusion that not all the movements could be arranged for the harp. But I managed to adapt sixof the eleven numbers, working them out with the sound of the orchestral version in mind. I hopethis CD will add an extra dimension to the performance practice of Glass’s most frequentlyperformed works.Lavinia Meijer

“My goal is to make the harp better known as a soloinstrument, with all its possibilities, which are often still unknown to the wider audience” says Lavinia Meijer, a new artist at Channel Classics.

At the age of eight, she was already captivated by the magical sounds of the harp, so pure and rich. Her hope is that this selection will allow listeners to experience some of the magic she then felt and still feels.

Lavinia Meijer (1983) is recognized worldwide as one of the most promising rising stars of the moment.

Born in Korea and adopted into a Dutch family, she is now based in the Netherlands. She has toured as a solo-harpist across Europe, America and Asia, showing the many possibilities of the harp as a solo-instrument.

She won several important music prizes and special awards, and in addition to performing the standard harp repertoire, she experiments with electronic music, theatrical music and jazz.

“As if the multicolored strings were her canvas, Lavinia Meijer of the Netherlands “finger painted” her musical montage – rocking back and forth against her harp in rhythms of lively expression.” Herald Times

On her third CD for Channel Classics, the harpist Lavinia Meijer (28) has brought together popular Fantasies and Impromptus by Spohr, Fauré, Pierné, Saint-Saëns, Roussel and Glière. Added to these are world premieres on CD of two completely forgotten harpist composers: Johannes Snoer (1868-1936) and Gabriel Verdalle (1845-1912).

On her first and very successful CD for Channel Classics, ‘Divertissements’, Lavinia Meijer also recorded only compositions originally written for the harp, with works by Carlos Salzedo, André Caplet and Jacques Ibert. On her highly commended CD ‘Visions’ she presented twentieth-century repertoire, with works by Byrnes, Isang Yun and Takemitsu, in addition to Britten and Patterson.

Lavinia Meijer graduated cum laude at the Amsterdam Conservatory in 2005. She was awarded the Netherlands Music Prize in 2009. (more…)

Lavinia Meijer is recognized worldwide as one of the most successful rising stars of the harp. In October 2009 Meijer received the “Nederlandse Muziekprijs” at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw by the Minister of Culture. This Dutch Music Prize, a state prize, is the highest award a classical musician can obtain in The Netherlands. Besides performing the standard harp repertoire Lavinia Meijer is very keen on playing modern music. She is also interested in experiments with electronic music, theatrical performances and jazz. She has inspired several composers to write new compositions for the harp in all possible combinations, not only the violin also a saxophone quartet and even a rock band.

‘Visions’ presents a varied picture of recent repertoire from the last forty years and includes Britten’s haunting Suite, and Paul Patterson’s incredible pictorial pieces “Spiders” and “Bugs”. Lavinia Meijer’s performance of Garret Byrnes’ “Visions of Twilight” will surely become the benchmark recording of a work which has become one of the most performed works for harp ever since it’s premier in 2000.

In the booklet notes Lavinia Meijer writes:

I am sometimes asked to name my favourite stylistic period. It doesn’t matter to me, as long as we’re talking about good compositions and I can give them my own personal interpretation. It’s true that even as a young performer I discovered that I had an affinity for modern music. I am particularly interested by the technical and interpretative possibilities. It gives the performer a sense of freedom. I also enjoy the challenge of making modern music, which is experienced by so many people as “difficult”, into something not only approachable but exciting. Personal contact with the composer is a priceless advantage here. I would never have been able perform the works which were written specially for me by Garret Byrnes, Carlos Michans, and Jacob TV (Jacob ter Veldhuis) with such conviction if the composers hadn’t been around. What prompts a composer to write fantasies and impromptus? And what do the fantasy, a free form, and the impromptu, originally an improvised poem, have in common? We know that Spohr was inspired by a young harpist who was later to become his wife. But did Fauré, as director of the Paris Conservatory, simply have no option than to write, because a compulsory solo piece was required for the harp class examinations? Was the marine officer Roussel influenced by his travels to distant shores? And were the fantasias by Saint-Saëns inspired by his great love of the Arab world? We can sometimes only guess. What we do know is that the harp has always appealed to the imagination, and that both fantasies and impromptus have inspired many composers to give free rein to their creative powers.
