Joanne is the fifth studio album recorded by American singer Lady Gaga. It was released in 2016 as a follow-up to Artpop (2013) and Cheek to Cheek (2014). Gaga collaborated with several producers on the record, including Mark Ronson, Jeff Bhasker, BloodPop and RedOne, and co-produced the majority of the material. The music of Joanne features “stripped-down” soft rock and dance-pop styles in order to emphasize the singer’s vocal abilities, unlike on Artpop. Lyrically, the album delves on the theme of family and life’s emotions, with the death of her father’s sister, Joanne Stefani Germanotta, having a deep influence on the record.

Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born Soundtrack (2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

There’s a narrative to the soundtrack for Bradley Cooper’s 2018 remake of A Star Is Born, one that mirrors the one told in the movie. Often, the album features dialogue ripped from the screen — a full 15 tracks, actually, amounting to seven minutes of this 74-minute album — which means A Star Is Born almost plays like a Disney record from the ’60s or ’70s: it’s designed to tide listeners over until they get a chance to see the movie again. Of course, A Star Is Born is a musical, so its soundtrack is filled with full-fledged songs, all of which serve the story that the dialogue gooses along. Strip out the distracting dialogue tracks and the plot of A Star Is Born is still evident, as the music moves from the grungy Americana of Cooper’s character, through his affecting duets with Lady Gaga, toward her flashy pop, and then culminating with “I’ll Never Love Again,” the song where the two estranged lovers reunite. Each of these phases is expertly executed. Lukas Nelson assists Cooper in the rangy grunge of “Black Eyes,” while Jason Isbell’s spare “Maybe It’s Time” is an affecting slice of Americana. The second stage, where Gaga is duetting with Cooper, fuses their sensibilities seamlessly, particularly on the aching ballad “Shallow” and loping country-rock of “Music to My Eyes,” which was co-written by Nelson and Gaga. Her pop section plays like its own EP, and it’s snappy, stylish, and savvy, particularly on the retro-disco of “Why Did You Do That?” and soulful “Heal Me.” All the songs make sense narratively and on their own, so they hold together well and would amount to a first-rate soundtrack, if it weren’t for those meddling dialogue tracks, which wind up sapping any kind of momentum for the album.

Lady Gaga – Chromatica (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

According to Lady Gaga, Chromatica is an imaginary planet, a utopia that concretises her search for happiness. “I live on Chromatica, that is where I live. I went into my frame – I found Earth, I deleted it. Earth is cancelled”, she said during the promotion for this sixth album, released less than two years after the global success of the soundtrack for A Star Is Born. Chromatica’s sci-fi concept naturally steered the singer towards electronic music, tinged with concise and melodic pop. She not only surrounded herself with experienced producers (BloodPop, Burns, Madeon, Axwell…), but also with “extra-terrestrial” guest stars: Ariana Grande (Rain on Me), the K-pop band Blackpink (Sour Candy), and – with a large generational gap – Elton John (Sine From Above).

“Judas” is a song by American singer Lady Gaga, recorded for her second studio album, Born This Way (2011). It was released by Interscope Records on April 15, 2011 as the second single from the album. Written and produced by Lady Gaga and RedOne, “Judas” is a dance and electro house song about a woman in love with a man who betrayed her. It embodies the incidents that have haunted Gaga in the past, and its core meaning refers to the negative parts of her life that she cannot escape. Gaga has further explained that the song was also about honoring one’s inner darkness in order to bring oneself into the light. The artwork for the single was designed by Gaga in Microsoft Word. In spite of a polarizing impact on several religious groups, the song was generally well received by critics, who likened the song to “Bad Romance” with some noting it should have been the album’s lead single.

“Judas” received generally positive reviews from most music critics. The song has a similar sound to Gaga’s previous RedOne-produced tracks, including “Poker Face”, “LoveGame”, “Bad Romance”, and “Alejandro”. It contains three distinct hooks and a house-influenced break down. Gaga explained that the lines spoken during the breakdown talk about her as beyond redemption, regarding the traditional views of what a woman should be. “Judas” initially had a strong sales opening, but was less successful commercially in comparison to Gaga’s previous singles. The song reached the top ten of the charts in most major music markets, and also reached the top of the charts in South Korea.

A music video for the song was filmed in April 2011, co-directed by Gaga and Laurieann Gibson and co-starring Norman Reedus. It has a Biblical storyline where Reedus played Judas Iscariot and Gaga played Mary Magdalene. The video portrays them as modern day missionaries going to Jerusalem. It included the Biblical story of Judas betraying Jesus, and ended with Gaga as Magdalene getting stoned to death. Before its release, the Catholic League condemned Gaga for the use of religious imagery and her role in the video. However, the video was generally praised by critics and nominated for two awards at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Gaga has performed “Judas” on a number of television shows, including The Graham Norton Show, Saturday Night Live, Good Morning America’s “Summer Concert Series”, the French X Factor as well as on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
