In 1871 Fauré joined the Société Nationale de Musique whose mission was to promote French music and offer a forum for the circulation of orchestral and chamber works. The Society was to be the springboard for much of Fauré’s chamber music including the Piano Quartets. Kathy Stott is an acknowledged interpreter of Fauré’s music and the BBC Music Magazine recently wrote “Kathryn Stott reinforces her position as one of the finest Fauré interpreters of her generation”. She has long wished to record Fauré’s hauntingly beautiful two piano quartets but was looking for the right ensemble. Fortunately she found the Hermitage String Trio, a group she has toured with on a number of occasions. The Strad recently wrote of the group “This ensemble will do much to put more string trio repertory on the musical map”. The Quartets are coupled with the Nocturne No. 4 for solo piano.

During the eighteenth century the cello gradually emerged from the anonymity of the continuo group, and by the beginning of the Romantic era the instrument had become an indispensable tool for composers. Robert Schumann, who had himself taken cello lessons, was very fond of it, describing is as a ‘beautiful instrument’; and Johannes Brahms, who acquired considerable skill as a cellist, praised its ‘masculine, serious character’. It is therefore to be hoped that neither composer would object to Christian Poltéra’s sensitive adaptations of their works.

This release takes us to the fashionable salons of late 19th-century Paris. Superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott partner in this album of elegant French chamber music aptly titled “Paris: La Belle Époque”. The recording features a combination of major works and well-known shorter pieces, all transcribed from their original versions for violin. The Faure Violin Sonata #1 and Franck Violin Sonata in A Major both take on a rich, warm character in cello transcription, and Massenet’s ever-popular “Meditation from Thais” and Saint-Saens’ exotic Havanaise work equally well as arranged by Ma. The cello and piano playing are both top-notch in this recording – refined and elegant overall, yet dramatic and exciting when called for (particularly in the Franck). It’s not surprising that Stott and Ma’s previous collaboration, “Soul of the Tango”, won a Grammy.

Five years ago, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott created an album called “Songs from the Arc of Life,” which charted an imagined lifetime through song and its unique way of storytelling. It had long been their wish to explore this medium further, but they could never have imagined that the catalyst would be a pandemic that fundamentally rearranged our ways of living. “Songs of Comfort and Hope” was conceived in April 2020 when people everywhere were entering a dramatic new world, one in which we have been separated from our loved ones and many filled with fear and isolation. Featuring twenty one new recordings, ranging from fresh arrangements of traditional folk tunes, pop songs, and jazz standards to mainstays from the western classical repertoire, the songs on the album bring a sense of community, identity, and purpose, crossing boundaries and binding us together in thanks, consolation, and encouragement. This is music that tells stories, that marks occasions private and public, that gives voice to celebrations, remembrances, and all of life’s mysteries. They are songs that pay tribute to champions of social justice like Paul Robeson and Violeta Parra and to the troubadours of our joy, imagination, and sorrow like Wu Tong, Francis Poulenc, and Benjamin Britten. They are creations that, as Felix Mendelssohn once wrote, express thoughts that are “not too indefinite to be put into words, but on the contrary, too definite.” Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott hope that the familiarity and reinvention contained in this music offers everyone some comfort and hope.
