Acclaimed saxophonist Joshua Redman makes his Blue Note debut with “Where Are We,” his first project with the participation of a vocalist throughout, Italian-American singer Gabrielle Cavassa.

The songs with states and cities in the title immediately reveal that this is about the U.S., and what contemporary America means to Redman and the others involved in this album. Part of the album consists of jazz and pop standards, and although Redman keeps the songs close to the original, he always creates a sense of new discovery.

With Walking Shadows in 2013, Joshua Redman submerged his saxophone in a beautiful orchestral arrangement by the composer Patrick Zimmerli. Six years later, we find the two men together again on Sun on Sand, a dense suite in which each movement is, according to their author Zimmerli, an “expression of light”. Redman is accompanied by the Brooklyn Rider Ensemble, bassist Scott Colley and percussionist Satoshi Takeishi. Together, they blur the boundaries between jazz and contemporary music thanks to an unusual combination of pieces by George Russell, Milton Babbitt, Michael Nyman and even Frank Zappa. The light found here comes in all kinds of tones. Going from chiaroscuro to bright sunlight, Joshua Redman and Patrick Zimmerli’s record is like a colour chart made up of very original shades. In 2019, orchestral jazz is far from being an over-crowded genre, so this excellent project deserves some attention. – Max Dembo

Nonesuch Records releases saxophonist Joshua Redman and pianist Brad Mehldau’s Nearness, the longtime friends’ and collaborators’ first duo album, on September 9, 2016. Nearness, a selection of duets recorded live during their recent European tour, is available for pre-order now at iTunes and in the Nonesuch Store, where an instant download of the album track “Ornithology” is included with purchase. You can hear the track and find out where the duo will be performing together this fall below; for all the latest tour details, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.

Brad Mehldau first came to prominence as a member Joshua Redman’s quartet in the 1990s before becoming a bandleader himself. The pair first reunited in 2010 when Redman was featured on Mehldau’s album Highway Rider. In 2013, Mehldau was featured as a performer and producer on Redman’s Walking Shadows.
“It’s like one of those friendships where you don’t see someone for a long stretch and then you fall right back where you left off,” Mehldau told the Ottawa Citizen when he and Redman performed at the city’s jazz festival in 2011. According to the Citizen’s Peter Hum, these two friends are “among the most potent and influential jazz instrumentalists of their generation, and what Mehldau calls ‘picking up’ is in fact world-class improvising before rapt audiences.”

Each artist has recorded extensively for Nonesuch, with a wide variety of collaborators. Brad Mehldau’s label debut was the 2004 solo disc Live in Tokyo and includes six records with his trio: House on Hill, Day Is Done, Brad Mehldau Trio Live, Ode, Where Do You Start, and Blues and Ballads. His collaborative records on the label include Love Sublime, Highway Rider, Metheny Mehldau, Metheny Mehldau Quartet, Modern Music, and Mehliana: Taming the Dragon. Mehldau’s additional solo albums on Nonesuch include Live in Marciac and last year’s 8-LP/4-CD 10 Years Solo Live, which the New York Times says “contains some of the most impressive pianism he has captured on record.”

Joshua Redman’s first album on Nonesuch was the Grammy-nominated Momentum, released in 2005. His other releases on the label include Back East, Compass, and Trios Live, all of which explore the trio format; MoodSwing, originally released in 1994 with Redman’s own band, including Mehldau, and re-released by Nonesuch in 2009; Walking Shadows, his first recording to include an orchestral ensemble, from 2013; and The Bad Plus Joshua Redman, his 2015 collaboration with the acclaimed trio, which the New York Times called “a knockout” and NPR called “a roaring and beautiful summit meeting.” In 2004, he was a founder of the SFJAZZ Collective, an eight-piece, multi-generational ensemble of accomplished musicians. Since 2009, Redman has been performing with a new collaborative group called James Farm, whose members also include pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland. The group has two releases on Nonesuch; their self-titled album from 2011, and City Folk, released in 2014.

Transmission and legacy are at the heart of jazz. Even in the more radical moments, or even the revolutionary ones, jazz musicians have always, one way or another, paid tribute to their elders. With Still Dreaming, Joshua Redman only confirms that. With trumpet player Ron Miles, bass player Scott Colley and drummer Brian Blade, the saxophonist drives a quartet which pays homage to Old and New Dreams, a band carried between 1975 and 1987 by his late father, the saxophonist Dewey Redman. A formation then composed of double bass player Charlie Haden, trumpet player Don Cherry and drummer Ed Blackwell, all former bodyguards of Ornette Coleman… But if this story about transmission and legacy is at the heart of the music of Joshua Redman and his friends, everything here is all invention and creation. These four don’t intend to take us to the museum! Even when they reinterpret compositions such as Charlie Haden’s Playing or Ornette Coleman’s Comme il faut and The Rest, their approach isn’t some kind of basic sanctification. On the contrary! We are here in the presence of four virtuoso, each being among the best in their area. As for Redman, he has rarely played that well. He’s often economic in his play. His breath, never wordy, is the one of almost mystical incantations that Colley’s and Blade’s rhythms make even more majestic. And then there is Brian Blade, this drummer performing with feathers in his hands. He’s an impressive colorist who radiates on everything he touches… In short, this is a masterful disc for sophisticated ears.  – Marc Zisman

Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride and Brian Blade. A mere glance at Round Again’s line-up is capable of arousing a sense of collective hysteria among jazz fans. The original members of the saxophonist’s first quartet haven’t recorded together since MoodWing was released in 1994. “We would have done it ten years if it were up to me”, explains Mehldau, “Josh, Christian and Brian are all my heroes. It’s like playing with The Avengers!” It’s a worthy comparison seeing as these four really are considered superheroes in today’s jazzosphere. In almost a quarter of a century, their aura and playing has developed in an exponential way to the point that the quartet has achieved an irrevocable spiritual chemistry. In this brand-new offering (three compositions by Redman, two by Mehldau, and one each for McBride and Blade), they immediately show off a bond which allows them to perform extraordinary and colossal swing. Under the hood of this sparkling, perplexing yet vintage Rolls Royce of a record, RoundAgain is a meaningful four-way conversation. From beginning (Undertow) to end (Your Part to Play), mutual respect is at the heart of their drive and direction; even Redman’s verbose saxophone never steals the spotlight. Let’s just hope that we won’t have to wait another 26 years before they do it all again… – Marc Zisman

Walking Shadows is the highly anticipated new album by acclaimed saxophonist, Joshua Redman. The album, comprising twelve ballads, is Redman’s first recording to include an orchestra ensemble. Produced by Brad Mehldau, the recording features the core quartet of Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier and Brian Blade. Walking Shadows includes original tunes from Redman and Mehldau along with works by a wide range of composers such as John Mayer and Pino Palladino; Kern and Hammerstein; and Lennon and McCartney.

Joshua Redman is one of the most visible jazz musicians of the last 15 years, which says something not just about his natural flow as an improviser and his command as a bandleader, but also about his willingness to use words…to represent jazz to the outside world. – New York Times (more…)
