A surprising and refreshing journey which explores the confines of the repertoire for saxophone and piano, Walking the Dog unites two formidable virtuosos of the contemporary classical scene, the Austrian Andreas Mader and the German Joseph Moog.Walking the Dog is a multifaceted work, an authentic melting-pot, a surprising witness to the richness of the international musical scene at the beginning of the 20th century. One would then encounter styles as diverse as the mambo, the merengue, the habanera, or the samba, or even fusions of these seemingly separate genres. Andreas Mader and Joseph Moog open their recital with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue in the inspiring version of the Japanese Jun Nagao. Under their sensitive and incisive fingers, it becomes the spirit of Jazz itself, sparkling and fresh. The Suite of seven pieces adapted from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet pursues it in a trenchant and caustic way: the saxophone, part soprano part tenor, displays all it’s colours. This programme also pays tribute to France – a well-deserved homage to the country where Adolf Sax fathered such a great family of instruments. Some works are iconic, such as Debussy’s Rhapsody (in a new and impressive version by the saxophonist), Milhaud’s Scaramouche, some less known, like the Two Pieces by Lili Boulanger, and we have a genuine rarity, the Five Exotic Dances, a brilliant and exciting suite of miniature compositions from 1961 by Jean Francaix. Andreas Mader and Joseph Moog conclude their journey by a return to the origins – New York – by giving us the little Promenade, under the title « Walking the Dog », that Gershwin composed for the film Shall We Dance with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. This is an absolutely thrilling album which arouses both curiosity and senses, a true revelation from this surprising duo. It is impossible to resist Andreas Mader’s voluptuous saxophone interlocked into the golden piano playing of Joseph Moog.

Three pianist-composers from the first half of the last century form the programme for Joseph Moog’s new album. For this recording he is partnered by pianist Kai Adomeit in three works for two pianos – Rachmaninoff’s late Symphonic Dances from 1940, York Bowen’s Theme & Variations from 1951, and Rachmaninoff’s friend and compatriot Medtner’s Two Pieces. York Bowen had many Rachmaninoff works in his extensive concert repertoire, and he became known without much justification as ‘The English Rachmaninoff’. However strange that may sound, he like the two Russians on this recording represent (with Prokofiev) the last of the great pianist composers of the 20th century.

One could lose oneself among the multitude of German orchestras, so active is musical life in that great musical country. But these orchestras’ many fusions can render reality somewhat opaque. This is the case with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie which offers us here a new recording of Brahms’ First Piano Concerto in D minor with Joseph Moog, coming on the heels of the recording of the Second, which was released in 2017. This orchestra, founded in 2007, was the product of a merger between the Saarbrücken and Kaiserlautern Radio Orchestras, whose total membership has fallen from 152 to 98 musicians today.

Joseph Moog has an enviable reputation as a Liszt interpreter with two earlier albums devoted to the composer being praised by the critics: “these recordings shine with an overall mastery and insight… rival discs by Brendel and Zimmerman in particular may thrill and delight the most discerning Lisztian, but even in this company Joseph Moog holds his head high” – Gramophone

On his new Onyx album, ‘From Heaven To Hell,’ Moog programmes works that traverse a wide range of emotions, from the divine and heavenly to the demonic.

Brahms was 48 years old and at the height of his powers when he completed his Piano Concerto No. 2. The Olympian B flat Concerto is, famously, not only one of the most technically challenging of all piano concertos to play but also one of the longest and a supreme test of the soloist’s technique and stamina. Not far behind it in terms of the challenges it presents the soloist with, is the early Burleske for piano and orchestra by Richard Strauss. Dedicated to Hans von Bülow as a thank-you present, Bülow however, refused to learn it, considering it to be ‘unplayable’. This may have had something to with the fact that Bülow’s hands could barely span an octave – an insuperable obstacle in a work that demands superlative, stamina-sapping octaves – but which begs the question why the composer should write something so physically unsuitable for his mentor. This is repertoire in which Joseph Moog excels

Joseph Moog, after recording both Brahms piano concertos for Onyx Classics, turns his attention to one of the most demanding and forbidding of piano concertos. Max Reger’s concerto dates from 1910. This rugged giant of a concerto displays all Reger’s formidable skill at using large orchestral forces with great clarity, making the piano part of the orchestral fabric. The concerto has much music that is both brilliant and poetic as well as passages of great turmoil. The album includes the 6 Intermezzi, which display a different facet of this complex composer. These are delightful pieces, tender, romantic with much poetry.

German pianist Joseph Moog (born in 1987), recipient of the prestigious Young Artist of the Year award at the 2012 and 2015 Gramophone Classical Music Awards as well as 2014 Solo Instrumentalist for his album “Scarlatti Illuminated”, has led a stunning fifteen-year international career that has led him to perform on the world’s greatest stages accompanied by excellent orchestras. His repertoire includes the great classical repertoire, romanticism and 20th century as well as rarities that have become his trademark (rather than a simple specialisation). He has tackled works from the likes of Leopold Godowsky, Ferruccio Busoni, Anton Rubinstein, Moritz Moszkowski and Ignaz Friedman, some of the most significant virtuoso-composers of their time. Here, we find him deep in exploration of the French repertoire with Debussy’s twelve Études, completed by a thirteenth one which was recently discovered in the composer’s drafts and duly finished by Roy Howat. The album also features an absolute essential, Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, which Moog performs with great clarity. It’s as if the preceding Études had warmed up his fingers as well as his mind and naturally spilled over into the famous triptych.

Earning a Grammy nomination and Gramophone Magazine’s Young Artist of the Year award in 2015, Joseph Moog is one of the finest young virtuoso pianists of our time. On this release, Moog turns to Chopin’s piano sonatas. Piano Sonata No.1 is a rarely heard work. It shows the young composer as yet untouched by the influences of Beethoven and the other great composer-pianists of the period. It owes more to Mozart and the late classical period. By the time he composed the Piano Sonata No.2, Chopin had fully absorbed the early romanticism of Hummel and Field, and developed a strong distinctive voice. The slow movement, a funeral march, is one of the most famous pieces of music ever composed. Piano Sonata No.3 is a masterpiece, one of the greatest works for piano of the 19th century, and displays the total mastery Chopin had achieved by the end of his tragically short life. This Onyx recording represents yet another outstanding achievement by Joseph Moog.

Paganini’s Caprices have exerted a mesmeric attraction for composers since their publication in 1820 (they were composed between 1802 – 1817). Liszt, Chopin, Berlioz, Rachmaninov to name a few. Schumann’s two sets of Etudes were the result of hearing Paganini play in Frankfurt in April 1830. These early compositions are comparatively rare in performance – they were composed at the same time as the Abegg Variations Op.1, Papillons Op.2, Davidsbündlertänze Op.6, the Toccata Op.7 and the famous Carnaval Op.9. From these early works to his last days in the asylum at Endenich where he composed a piano accompaniment to the 24th Caprice, Paganini was still working his magic on Schumann.

Joseph Moog has established an enviable reputation as one of the most impressive virtuoso pianists of the younger generation. His catholic tastes embrace both the core repertoire and many works from its backwaters – works that were once warhorses, but have for no apparent reason fallen into unjust neglect. The Moszkowski piano concerto on this new CD is such a work. Overflowing with memorable tunes, the piano writing and indeed the handling of the orchestra marks this out as a very skilfully constructed work. Do not expect moments of profundity or an emotional roller coaster: just marvel at the fluidity and brilliance of Moszkowski’s writing. This is salon music of the highest order, and none the worse for that!

Moog couples the Moszkowski with one of the concertos in the repertoire whose fortunes have not waned – the evergreen Grieg concerto which never fails to impress the listener.
