Born in Shanghai in 1955, Xiaogang Ye is regarded as one of China’s leading contemporary composers. He has written music in a variety of genres, including symphonic and chamber works as well as scores for the stage. Ye has also composed music for films and the two works recorded here are both examples of this. Sichuan Image consists of 29 brief and atmospheric pieces composed to accompany a filmed travelogue of the scenic province in Western China. In preparation for the work, the composer visited mountains, river, villages and ancient historical sites in Sichuan. Lending further colour to the large symphony orchestra, four Chinese musicians perform on traditional instruments.

An esteemed conductor who has worked with most of the major orchestras and made more than 300 recordings, José Serebrier is also a prolific composer. He became established at an early age with Leopold Stokowski giving the world première of his Symphony No. 1, when he was only 17 years old. He studied composition with Martinu and Copland, while also learning conducting from Doráti, Monteux and Stokowski, who named the 22-year old Serebrier his associate conductor. This dual career has flourished ever since, as demonstrated by this disc on which Serebrier conducts the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in some of his most recent works. These include the Symphonic BACH Variations for piano and orchestra in which Alexandre Kantorow, winner of the 2019 Tchaikovsky competition, shines in the solo part. Newly recorded material is combined with the previously released Flute Concerto – the only work on the disc not conducted by Serebrier himself – and two tango-inspired shorter pieces. For Serebrier, these and the recent Last Tango before Sunrise form a kind of return to his youth in Uruguay, where he was born.

The Warner Classics label, which has mostly focused on innovative programming concepts, deserves credit for its Dvork series featuring Uruguyan conductor Jos Serebrier and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra: classic repertory, shaped by a great conductor, in other words old-school stuff of the best kind. The entire series has been impressive, but here Serebrier, nearing 80 when this album appeared in 2015, outdoes his previous efforts with music that’s a joy from start to finish. The Legends, Op. 59, little tone poems without explicit programs, are exceptionally fluid and poetic. And the main attraction, the Symphony No. 8 in G major, Op. 88, is really exceptional in its level of detail and overall effect. Serebrier applies tempo variations in the first two movements (sample the melody at the very beginning), giving them the episodic quality of tone poems as well. The third movement is a transcendent apotheosis of the dance. And it all leads up to the finale, where little bits of rubato set off the blaring brass fanfare in such a way that you’ll be stomping your feet. The Bournemouth Symphony plays at the top of its powers, and the engineering at the Lighthouse concert hall is top-notch. Destined to be a standard recording of the Symphony No. 8, and heartily recommended to all.

This recording of Dvorák: Symphony No.2 plus Slavonic Dances from José Serebrier and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is the fourth volume in a projected series of Dvorák’s complete symphonies.

Written in a period spanning three decades, Dvorák nine symphonies had their numbering changed some fifty years after his death. The first four symphonies remained unpublished for many years, while the last five had been published during Dvorák‘s lifetime as Nos.1–5. Thus the famous No.9, “From the New World”, first appeared as No.5, and the D major, No.6, was introduced as No.1. These numbers remained in place until the middle of the last century, when the nine symphonies were at last renumbered according to their true chronology.

The Symphony No.2 in B flat major, op.4 was composed by Antonín Dvorák between August and October 1865. Dvorák sent the score to be bound, and the legend goes that he was unable to pay the binder, who thus decided not to return the score. The symphony finally had its world premiere in 1888 — its sole performance during the composer’s lifetime. It was conducted by Adolf Cech, who had previously conducted the premieres of Dvorák’s Symphonies 5 and 6.
