With roots in Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Iceland, Copenhagen-based bassist Richard Andersson brings together legendary drummer and ECM recording artist Jorge Rossy with in-demand guitarist Per Møllehøj for “Inviting”, a true homage to the giants of jazz out August 12th.

Turning to music aged 14 after a firework accident left him blind, he found his way into jazz first through Keith Jarrett and, later, the live recordings of pianist Brad Mehldau.

The drummer on the latter’s albums, alongside bassist Larry Grenadier? None other than a young Jorge Rossy.

Jorge “Jordi” Rossy (born August 21, 1964) is a spanish jazz drummer, pianist and vibraphonist.

His father, Mario, played the piano that was in the family home, as did Jorge’s sister, Mercedes. Jorge started playing percussion at the age of 11, and was given a drum set a year later. When he was 14, he got a cheap vibraphone, which he practised on for two years. He then took up the trumpet, initially to improve his musical listening ability.

For this astonishing record marking his début as a leader on the ECM label, Jorge Rossy swapped his sticks for mallets, and concentrated exclusively on that other favourite instrument of his: the vibraphone. Flanked by double bassist Robert Landfermann and drummer Jeff Ballard, the Barcelona native who came to prominence as a member of Brad Mehldau’s trio between 1994 and 2005 also showcases his talents as a composer on Puerta (he wrote nine of the album’s ten themes). Here, he is approaching his art with an eye for purity. “With this trio, the aim was to give the instruments plenty of room to breathe and unfold by playing fewer key notes.” And they certainly have space! This minimalist playing allows Rossy’s rhythm to become one with his improvisations, and to underline the beauty of the often-dreamy melodies that make Puerta so timeless. – Marc Zisman
