For Migration, composer John Powell was tasked with creating a theme for a reluctant hero that evolves throughout his journey. Written and directed by Benjamin Renner, Migration follows a family of ducks on a new journey. Mack (Kumail Nanjiani) is a mallard who is content with never leaving the safety of his pond, until his wife Pam (Elizabeth Banks) convinces him that their children need to see the world. Setting their sights on Jamaica, Mack takes his family on a trip south that quickly goes wrong. As they overcome new challenges and meet new friends, the family discovers they are capable of much more than they thought. As Mack’s attitude towards migrating changes throughout the film, Powell’s theme for the character became grander to match his growth.

Ever since the Star Wars franchise began in 1977, its music has been synonymous with legendary film composer John Williams. Now that the 86-year-old composer has announced that next year’s Episode IX will be the last time he’ll be scoring a Star Wars film, we can’t help feeling melancholic.

One of the most important things about any Star Wars movie is the soundtrack. Everyone knows how a Star Wars movie sounds. The opening is classic. There’s the great fanfare as the screen goes black and that big chord breaking into the familiar, triumphant main theme when the crawl starts. There are the leitmotifs of Luke, Leia, and The Imperial March, some of which fans can sing by heart. But the Solo: A Star Wars Story soundtrack is very different. For one thing, they don’t have the opening. Why? Because, like Rogue One before it, Solo is an anthology film, and does not have a crawl.

Solo is also like Rogue One in that composer John Williams did not write the score. He contributed (more on this in a minute) but the overall score was done by musician John Powell, who is best known for his work on How To Train Your Dragon and Shrek. (Yes, Shrek.)

The score for Solo is 20 tracks in all, 19 of which are done by Powell. The good news is none of the titles listed on the album are direct spoilers, so one can peruse the names in peace. Though some do bring to mind questions, such as the track entitled “Lando’s Closet.” Seriously, the man’s wardrobe gets its own theme song.

On the soundtrack to Solo: A Star Wars Story, John Powell became just the third person to compose a score for a live-action Star Wars film, following in the footsteps of John Williams and Rogue One’s Michael Giacchino. Without the burden of the official episode saga installments, Powell took the liberty to experiment with fresh sounds (for the Star Wars universe), delivering the most intriguing and nontraditional Star Wars music to date. Powell employs non-orchestral instrumentation, exciting and unexpected rhythmic percussion, and a choir to great effect (especially as a motif for the newly introduced band of Marauders). After Williams puts his trademark stamp on the project with a lone contribution (“The Adventures of Han”), Powell launches into hyperspace, adapting Williams’ familiar leitmotifs (“Meet Han,” “L3 & Millennium Falcon,” “Break Out,” “Reminiscence Therapy,” “Into the Maw,” and “Dice & Roll”) and injecting each composition with flair. The rousing “Corellia Chase” and “Flying with Chewie” swoop and sweep, but it’s not until “Train Heist” that Powell truly claims Solo as his own. Funky and primal, “Train Heist” pumps the coaxium hyperfuel into Solo and doesn’t look back. The sole pop track on the album belongs to vocalist Baraka May, whose slinky and sultry “Chicken in the Pot” sounds more like a trip-hop Bond theme than a Star Wars cantina tune. It’s one of many surprises that make Solo a fun, exciting, and engaging experience. Tasked with filling Williams’ iconic shoes, Powell didn’t simply mimic the master — as in Giacchino’s case — but instead charted his own course, capturing the outlaw spirit of the roguish Han Solo himself in the process. – Neil Z.
