Perhaps John Denver’s worst-selling album, Whose Garden Was This, is largely a record of cover songs, starting with the Tom Paxton-penned environmentalist anthem that is the title track, and including Denver versions of such songs as the Band’s “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Mr. Bojangles,” The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” and “Golden Slumbers.” Denver’s own contributions included the awkward “I Wish I Could Have Been There (Woodstock).” Though Denver tried in a sleeve note to weave all this into a theme, something about “all the things that change as we grow older.” In fact, Whose Garden Was This was an expendable collection of second-rate Denver songs and first-rate songs done better by others. Not surprisingly, it missed the charts. ~ William Ruhlmann

John Denver’s music always had a warm, home-spun quality to it, so it isn’t surprising that his 1975 holiday effort, Rocky Mountain Christmas, is a wonderfully low-key and friendly Christmas affair. Divided between classic carols and new numbers, such as the fine “Aspenglow” and “Christmas for Cowboys,” the album is an appealing, pretty record, perfect for late nights by the fireside.

Having lightened up on his political concerns and domestic strife on the cover-filled Dreamland Express, John Denver returned to both on One World. On the title track, he adopted the persona of a Caribbean man complaining about his homeland being referred to as the Third World, and hinting about revolution. On “Let Us Begin (What Are We Making Weapons For?),” he managed both to take on the farm crisis, and to expound on pacifism in the same song. “It’s A Possibility” closed out the album with a “We Are The World”-like anthem about ending sorrow and suffering. On his personal agenda, Denver seemed more hopeful than he had for much of the decade, producing two songs about falling in love again. But both of them had old copyright dates, and the most recent romantic reflection, “I Can’t Escape,” indicated he was still carrying the torch – “Sometimes I wish it was ten years ago,” he sang to his lost love. And he had other reasons to wish that. One World didn’t sell well enough to make the charts, and RCA Records, for which Denver had recorded numerous platinum albums, dropped him after 17 years. ~ William Ruhlmann

His #1-smash “best-of” from 1973! The collection includes material from his earlier days as a songwriter (going back to 1965 on “For Bobbie”) to his later hit “Rocky Mountain High.” Indeed many of these tracks were not hits per se, but as Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote for Allmusic, “the[se] were [the] songs that defined him.”

John Denver continued to proselytize for his favorite causes, love, peace, and freedom (in the great outdoors), on It’s About Time, but on a personal level he was fending off depression due to the woman who dumped him on his last album, Seasons Of The Heart (presumably his wife Anne, from whom he was divorced in 1983). Then, he had seemed reconciled to the breakup, singing with gentle equanimity about people who just can’t get along. By It’s About Time, he wasn’t keeping up that much of a front. In “Thought Of You,” “he called her up in the middle of the night hoping she was alone”; in “Falling Out Of Love,” he sang of “this sense of failure/such an incredible loss”; and in “I Remember Romance,” he wallowed in his memories. Somehow, though, Denver pulled himself together enough, with the help of his pals, Rita Marley and the Wailers, who played on the track “World Game,” to go back to preaching universal brotherhood. Emmylou Harris joined him on one of his patented Western anthems, “Wild Montana Skies,” and he called upon God (under various names, naturally) to assist him elsewhere. Unfortunately, Denver hadn’t only lost his true love. His fans were deserting him, too. It’s About Time was Denver’s lowest charting album in 12 years. ~ William Ruhlmann

„John Denver wasn’t merely hot during the mid-’70s; he was omnipresent on radio, TV, and on-stage for anyone who’d have him. Certainly, few artists enjoyed more than one greatest-hits collection – even if critics derided him as a granola-munching, tree-hugging folky who perennially smiled through life’s hardships. But the reality of Denver’s music is more complicated; behind the lush orchestration and gentle fingerpicking lies a more somber, contemplative side. In this respect, “Fly Away”‘s lament about city pressures could be considered his answer to the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby.” “Like a Sad Song” and “I’m Sorry” apologize to forsaken lovers. “Looking for Space” takes a similar tack, although coupled with a yearning to explore the world outside yourself – a theme that likely struck a chord in many listeners. Of course, Denver’s ecological commitment is never far away in “Welcome to My Morning (Farewell Andromeda)” and “Calypso,” his salute to the late French undersea explorer Jacques Costeau. “Annie’s Song” goes further by explicitly linking nature and sensuality, while “Back Home Again” and “Grandma’s Feather Bed” celebrate the pleasures of home and hearth. Anyone who’s ever expressed themselves could relate to “This Old Guitar,” on which Denver casts a wistful yet unsparing look at how the instrument influenced his life. As a snapshot of Denver’s best-loved hits, this collection surely does the job.“ (Ralph Heibutzki, AMG)
