With his alto sound soaring over a sax trio format on “For All We Know”, Jim Snidero demonstrates why he is a critical link in the alto saxophone lineage. Snidero pares down the soundscape to its essence, utilizing a set of standards to illuminate a rare combination of virtuosity, musicality and depth along with jazz masters Peter Washington-bass and Joe Farnsworth-drums. With a tone quality that’s second to none – Stereophile cited his sound as “one of the richest and purest on the planet” – Jim Snidero has showcased an enviable resonance in myriad contexts over the better part of the past four decades and 25 previous releases. Now, placing himself in the most exposed setting he’s ever inhabited, Snidero reaches the apex on the alto saxophone.

If you trace the path of alto saxophonist Jim Snidero’s varied output for Savant, you’ll note transitions with regard to instrumentation and personnel: from organ combo to quartets with guitar or piano, to the animated quintet music of tributes to Miles (MD66) and Cannonball Adderley (Jubilation!). With Waves of Calm, the veteran altoist enters a period of zeroing in on the essentials. As the saxophonist himself says, “I find myself editing more and more. I’ve been playing saxophone for a long time, and could easily play a lot more notes…[but now] you’re just looking for the right note at the right moment, searching for that one perfect thing.” With trumpeter Jeremy Pelt on half the tracks, piano phenom Orrin Evans at the Steinway & the Rhodes and Nat Reeves and Jonathan Barber completing the rhythm section, it would Jim Snidero has indeed found that”perfect thing.”

Ran Blake and Christine Correa have cultivated a unique musical relationship through their frequent collaborations, first by acknowledging the traditional lead/accompaniment approach and then charting a path that departs from precedent, sometimes radically.

Altoist Jim Snidero is the main soloist throughout this showcase, backed by ten strings (including violinist Mark Feldman) and assisted by pianist Renee Rosnes. Snidero did all of the arranging and contributed six of the pieces, including his three-part “River Suite.” Although there are variations in the tempos, Snidero is at his best on ballads where his lyrical style and attractive sound are well-featured. The strings are integrated well into the music, the melodies are generally strong, and Jim Snidero balances a style influenced a little by Sonny Stitt with some post-bop improvising. This is one of his finest recordings to date. – Scott Yanow

Over the course of the past three decades alto saxophonist and composer Jim Snidero has been constantly pushing himself to explore new territories and expand his outlook. In 1989 (!) his extraordinary album Blue Afternoon made its way into The Penguin Jazz Guide: The History of the Music in the 1001 Best Albums. Later on he made his mark in the sax-with-strings department, not only playing at the top of his game, but also composing and arranging all of the music on the project. Most recently he’s impressed more than a few listeners with a spate of fine albums on Savant. On this his latest release, Snidero tackles open modal forms and uses his unfettered imagination as a portal into free(r) territory, and takes his soloing to the next level by working an inside/outside approach that’s rooted in the structure and style of each song but radical enough to move in wildly unexpected directions. This is a musical promised land where revelations, whether subtle or seismic in nature, are guided by revolution.
