In a 1991 interview, Garcia said, “So they used to have this Monday night jam session, but Howard gradually sort of took it over. Howard’s this amazing organ player — difficult person, but wonderful musician. And for some reason he liked our playing, John [Kahn] and mine. We didn’t know each other, John and I. In fact we played with Howard for almost a year before we even actually started talking to each other. Really. We would just show up, plug in, and play. About half the set I’d be whispering to John, I’d be saying, ‘Hey, man, what key are we in?’ Howard didn’t have tunings or anything, he just played. Sometimes he would do these things that were so outside that you just couldn’t — unless you knew where it was going, you had no idea where to start. Sometimes they’d turn out to be just these things like four-bar blues turnarounds, relatively simple musical things, but they were so extended the way he’d play them — ‘God, what is this?’

Garcia is Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia’s first solo album, released in 1972.

Warner Bros. Records offered the Grateful Dead the opportunity to cut their own solo records, and Garcia was released around the same time as Bob Weir’s Ace and Mickey Hart’s Rolling Thunder. Unlike Ace, which was practically a Grateful Dead album, Garcia was more of a solo effort, as Garcia played almost all the instrumental parts. Six tracks (specifically those coauthored by lyricist Robert Hunter) eventually became standards in the Grateful Dead concert repertoire.

Some reprints of the album are self-released. “Loser” was covered by Cracker on their 1993 album Kerosene Hat.

This 1973 release features what is essentially a Bay Area bar band led by Merl Saund*rs (keyboards) and Jerry Garcia (guitar) during the latter musician’s downtime from the Grateful Dead. Along with the two subsequent “encore” volumes, Live at Keystone includes performances drawn from the quartet’s July 10-11, 1973, run in the intimate confines of Keystone Korners in Berkeley. With the support of Bill Vitt(percussion) and John Kahn (bass), the pair jams their way through an eclectic assortment of covers and a few equally inspired original instrumentals. The clavinet and Hammond B-3-driven “Keepers” (aka “Finders Keepers”) is one such composition from the team of Saund*rs and Kahn. This funky rocker pulsates through some downright greasy interactions that recall a cross between Sly Stone and Billy Preston. Their interpretation of “Positively 4th Street” — the first of two Bob Dylan covers — is laid-back and bluesy, which allows Garcia to stretch out instrumentally between the verses. His impassioned vocals weave between Saund*rs’ alternating murky and billowing organ fills, adding new depths of empathetic noir. Notably, David Grisman’s mandolin runs were not part of the live recording, but overdubbed later. Conversely, Jimmy Cliff’s “The Harder They Come” bops with an infectiously syncopated shuffle that glides along Saund*rs’ ethereal, swirling keyboard accents mimicking the hurdy-gurdy of a calliope. “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry” is given a languid and slinky workout that is highlighted by some of Garcia’s most incendiary fretwork in this collection. Joined in progress is “Space” — a bit of jazzy free-form which was initially preceded by “Someday Baby” during the July 10 performance. John Kahn truly shines as he barrels in between Saund*rs’ scatological leads and Garcia’s trippy guitar runs. This distinct ensemble improvisation recalls some of the Grateful Dead’s further-out sonic explorations during seminal mid-’70s performances of “Playing in the Band” and “Eyes of the World.” It likewise foreshadows the direction that the Dead would follow on their highly sophisticated and fusion-influenced Blues for Allah (1975).

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab # UDSACD 2140

This Grammy-nominated disc heralds the origins of the highly acclaimed acoustic duo of Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals) and David “Dawg” Grisman (mandolin). They had been chums for years by the time they began their direct partnership in earnest on December 7, 1990, with a nine-song set at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley, CA. Over half of that material would be reworked the following spring — for inclusion on this disc — at Grisman’s newly appointed, plush, and well-lit Dawg Studios. Along with David Grisman Quintet members Jim Kerwin (bass) and Joe Craven (percussion/fiddle), Garcia and Grisman revive a few familiar tunes covering every dimension of popular music, ranging from the blues (“The Thrill Is Gone”) to folk-rock (“Friend of the Devil”), as well as pop music standards such as Irving Berlin’s “Russian Lullaby” — which Garcia had previously covered on his 1974 Garcia (Compliments) album — and Hoagy Carmichael’s “Rockin’ Chair.” They also examined the origins of authentic traditional folk (“Walkin’ Boss”/”Two Soldiers”). Additionally, the pair collaborated on the original instrumental “Grateful Dawg,” which coalesces the distinct styles of Grisman’s “Dawg Music” with Garcia’s Grateful Dead intonations. The results are categorically brilliant and undoubtedly helped usher in the contemporary bluegrass and progressive bluegrass movements. Grisman’s sonically perfected studio coupled with his decades of hands-on engineering and producing expertise helped immensely in capturing and accurately reproducing their unaffected acoustic intimacy. Nowhere is this more evident than the 16-plus minute “Arabia” — which would become a showstopper once they hit the road in the early ’90s. The sound quite literally envelopes the listener, who autonomically becomes drawn into the track as it twists and slithers through several different movements — including the central theme, credited in the liner notes as being based on the traditional Cuban melody “Hasta Siempre.” All dimensions of “unplugged” enthusiasts who have not already made Jerry Garcia/David Grisman a top priority are strongly encouraged to do so.
