Revolutions is the ninth studio album by electronic musician and composer Jean-Michel Jarre, first released in August 1988. The album spans several genres, including symphonic industrial, Arabian inspired, light guitar pop and ethnic electro jazz. The album reached number #2 in the UK charts, Jarre’s best chart position since Oxygène. The Destination Docklands concert in London coincided with the release of the album.
While it can be easy to dislike and dismiss some cookie-cutter electronic music, the challenge lies in finding reasons to listen to it again. Such is the case with Revolutions by Jean Michel Jarre. One reviewer wrote, simply, “(This) is not revolutionary.” That is true; Jarre breaks no new ground with the release of this album. He does, however, continue to create original music in his own style. He is often imitated and that is the sincerest form of flattery. This album features ten short pieces (five minutes and 22 seconds is the longest) of pop influenced e-music. This disc neither challenges nor offends the listener. It has its moments but it neither soars nor plunges. Of course, die-hard Jarre fans will love this disc. Fans of Synergy, Char-El, Klaus Schulze, and Ashra will like it.

Rendez-vous is the eighth studio album by electronic musician and composer Jean-Michel Jarre released on Disques Dreyfus, licensed to Polydor, in April 1986. It sold some three million copies worldwide and remains Jarre’s longest-running chart album in both the U.S. and UK, with a 20-week run in the U.S. and an impressive 38 week run in the UK. The album art of the album was created by long-time collaborator Michel Granger.

The last track on the album was originally scheduled to include a saxophone part recorded by astronaut Ron McNair on the Space Shuttle Challenger, making it the first piece of music to be recorded in space, but on 28 January 1986, 73 seconds after lift-off, the shuttle disintegrated and the entire Challenger crew were killed. The track was dedicated to McNair and the other astronauts on board Challenger. On the album the saxophone part is played by saxophonist Pierre Gossez.

A total of 41 tracks have been hand-picked, remastered and retouched by Jarre himself. Jean-Michel Jarre is a pioneer in the electronic, ambient and new-age genres. His first mainstream success was the 1976 album Oxygène. More albums were to follow, but his 1979 concert served as a blueprint for his future performances around the world. Several of his albums have been released to coincide with large-scale outdoor events, and he is now perhaps as well-known as a performer as he is as a musician.

The OXYGENE-Trilogy consisting of the albums OXYGENE 1, OXYGENE 2 and OXYGENE 3. Within the framework of the Trilogy the masterpiece OXYGENE 2 is again available in the original.
40 years after the huge international impact of OXYGENE, and 20 years from it’s second volume OXYGENE 7-13, Jean-Michel Jarre is fulfilling a trilogy of albums with OXYGENE 3, containing seven newly composed and recorded pieces, consistently titled parts 14-20. His inspiration for the newly added parts on OXYGENE 3 was not to go back in time, but to add a sense of “now” to his iconic piece of work. Plunging into the environment of OXYGENE with it’s highly original dark, moody and at times quite upbeat musical language, Jarre references some of the music from his entire body of work on OXYGENE 3. It’s a state-of-the-art recording, embracing both classic and modern ways of music production.

Jean-Michel Jarre performed a handful of concerts in Peking and Shanghai in 1981, marking the first time that a modern Western musical artist had played in communist China. Sensing the historical importance of the event (and the career milestone it represented), a double album of live music from these concerts was released the following year as Les Concerts en Chine. The release is half musical travelogue (featuring new pieces presumably inspired by China) and half career retrospective, with faithful reproductions of excerpts from Equinoxe and Les Chants Magnetiques (Magnetic Fields) interspersed with new works and snippets of Chinese dialogue. There has always been a strong visual component to Jarre’s live shows, which the listener is left out of on these recordings (small pockets of applause during some of the songs allude to the graphic goings-on), but even without the lights and lasers this is engaging stuff. Highlights from the show include “Jonques de Pecheurs au Crepuscule” (Fishing Junks at Sunset), a welcome respite from Jarre’s ultra-modern music that features a traditional Oriental arrangement, and new works like “Arpegiateur” and “Nuit a Shangai” that compare favorably with the brisk, streamlined sound of Tangerine Dream in the early ‘80s. Connecting these sections with dialogue and street noises (some of which, in the case of “Les Chants Magnetiques,” have always been there) breaks up the concert nicely, although two lighthearted intermissions (“L’Orchestre Sous la Pluie” and “La Derniere Rumba”) make too fine a point of it. Owners of Equinoxe and Les Chants Magnetiques expecting to hear a new interpretation of these albums won’t find any surprises on Les Concerts en Chine except a short ping-pong match inexplicably billed as “Les Chants Magnetiques I.” The real attraction is the new music, and the newness that all of this must have held for its audience.

On 16 November 1978 appeared ‘Equinoxe’. Forty years later, his successor appears for the day. In 1978, Jean-Michel Jarre composed and produced an album that would reflect the music of our future, revolutionizing electronic music history. As a supporting element, it was ‘Equinoxe’ to the ‘Watchers’ (the observers), which were seen on the original album cover in infinite numbers. These Watchers were in 1987, in an emerging era of technology and innovation, a symbol of machines watching us. An early vision of what the future would bring us.

The Docklands concerts (there were two), were held at the London Docks after long negotiations and a great deal of to-ing and fro-ing on the part of the local community authorities. The Docks were to create the setting for a presentation of Jarre’s album, Revolutions, an album clearly inspired by the history of the Docklands. The concerts scheduled for September finally took place in October and the weather turned out to be typically British – rain and strong winds. Despite the weather, the concert tickets sold in record time of a few hours, for a total of 400,000 in total over the two dates.

The stage was built on a 1,000 ton floating barge which lay in the Thames, on which Jarre and his musicians, a choir and an orchestra performed. It was as though this bleak area had been transformed for two evenings into an industrial, futuristic, multimedia theatre, which united Jarre’s electronic music and vision, and the drab landscape of the Docklands in perfect, psychedelic harmony.

Chronologie (English: “chronology” – some later reissues use the English spelling) is the eleventh studio album by French electronic musician and composer Jean-Michel Jarre, and was released on Disques Dreyfus (with license to Polydor) in 1993. It is inspired by Stephen Hawking’s book A Brief History of Time. “Chronologie Part 4” and “Chronologie Part 5” started out as a composition for the Swiss watch company Swatch. The sound of Chronologie was based on a new wave of electronic dance music that had been developing since the late 1980s. Like Jarre’s previous album Waiting for Cousteau, Chronologie charted at Number 11 in the UK charts. The album cover art was created by long-time collaborator Michel Granger.

Recorded in 2000 and not available in the United States until 2004, Metamorphoses is another of those enormous productions by the French electronic music master. Offering a cycle of songs, Jarre and his platoon of keyboards – a wonderful meld of cutting-edge and vintage technologies – delve into the notion of change and evolution with a remarkable efficiency despite the plethora of guest vocalists and instrumentalists. His collaborations with Laurie Anderson (“Je me souviens”) and Natacha Atlas (“C’est la Vie”) are wonderfully successful. The former is a staggered sequencer-driven track whose pulse varies, throbs, and wanes as the vocals are articulated in syncopated fashion in alternating cadences. The latter is an Eastern-tinged house track, where elements of disco, breakbeat, and even jungle enter and leave the mix after leaving traces of themselves on what follows their articulation. Atlas sings and wails and whispers, following sequences of broken beats and ushering in acid house pulsations as a lonesome violins caresses the proceedings and the cut breaks wide open in a frenzy of longing and increasing tempos before a trancey set of beats takes it out. Other vocalists include Lisa Jacobs (“Millions of Stars”), Dierdre Dubois (“Miss Moon”), and Veronique Bossa (“Give Me a Sign”) Because of its many colors, Metamorphoses is the most adventurous recording of Jarre’s in a decade, and articulates his universal language of transcultural musicality and futuristic altruism fantastically.

It was the early 2000 and downtempo and acid jazz were being smothered by the rise of French Touch house. But they found an escape route when lounge music flared into life, with its 90 BPM tempos, played at cool hangouts like the Mezzanine de l’Alcazar in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, the Buddha Bar or the Costes hotel, all of which have brought out compilations in their own names. Although the movement wasn’t quite a musical revolution, radio programmers took advantage of it to soften their playlists, and lounge invaded the bars and restaurants of Paris (soon to be replaced by Deep House, which was then languishing in a very deep basement indeed).

Jean-Michel Jarre has composed and recorded a 52 minute musical score for ‘Amazônia’, a new project by award winning photographer and filmmaker Sebastião Salgado, for the Philharmonic Paris. The exhibition launches on April 7th and will later travel to South America, Roma and London…

‘Amazônia’ is an immersive exhibition focussing on the Brazilian Amazon, featuring more than 200 photographs and other media by Salgado. He travelled the region for six years, capturing the forest, the rivers, the mountains and the people who live there, and most of the work will be seen publicly for the first time. At the heart of the exhibit is an invitation to see, hear and think about the future of biodiversity and the place of humans in the living world.

JMJs accompanying sound-creation is a symphonic world which will engulf visitors to the exhibit in the sounds of the forest. Using a blend of electronic and orchestral instruments with other real-life natural sounds, the score has also been recorded in binaural audio, for a truly immersive experience.
