Released in 1976, Oxygene proved to be a massive hit for French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre. The son of film composer Maurice Jarre, the synthesizer player sought to create warmer sonic textures through the technology of the time, and the result was this pioneering six-part album. Oxygene’s bizarrely creepy cover, featuring a skull underneath the peeled-away surface of the globe, belies the music’s lush beauty, though it does point to haunting moments such as “Oxygene III.” The record’s most recognizable track is the majestic “Oxygene IV,” which features percolating synth lines and spare, nearly imperceptible beats. While the album would lead Jarre to international fame, especially in his native France and the rest of Europe, it also proved to be a recording that he struggled to top, even going so far as to release a sequel, Oxygene 7-13, more than 20 years later. For aficionados of late-’70s electronic acts such as Tangerine Dream and Vangelis, this bold outing is essential. – Eric Schneider

Les Chants Magnétiques was the third of Jean Michel Jarre’s albums in a row to update Tangerine Dream’s atmospheric sequencer trance for a synth pop and mainstream crossover audience. The side-long “Les Chants Magnetiques, Pt. 1” is the capstone of the album, while “Pt. 2” through “Pt. 5” move through driving electronic pop and several passages more indebted to Jarre’s past in the musique concrète scene. It’s often just as melodic and inventive as Oxygène, though not as consistently creative.

As the follow-up album to Oxygene, Equinoxe offers the same mesmerizing affect, with rapid spinning sequencer washes and bubbling synthesizer portions all lilting back and forth to stardust scatterings of electronic pastiches. Using more than 13 different types of synthesizers, Jarre combines whirling soundscapes of multi-textured effects, passages, and sometimes suites to culminate interesting electronic atmospheres. Never repeating the same sounds twice, it is obvious that the science fiction hype of the late ’70s played a large part in the making of this album. Computerized rhythms and keyboard-soaked transitions scurry by, replaced by even quicker, more illustrious ones soon after. There is always a pulsating beat or a fluttering tempo happening somewhere in each of the tracks, which are titled as a numbered sequence one to eight. Each track harbors its own energy and electronic fleetness, but none are identical in sound or pace. So much electronic color is added to every track that it is impossible to concentrate on any particular segment, resulting in waves of synth drowning the ears at high tide. – Mike DeGagne

‘Oxymoreworks’ is a collection of collaborations with other artists covering a wide range of electronic genres. The nine-piece work includes reworkings of tracks from Jarre’s 2022 album ‘Oxymore’. Each track was composed and produced by Jarre in direct collaboration with the respective artist, resulting in a distinctive new version that showcases the shared artistry of both musicians. Jean-Michel Jarre said of the collection, ‘Oxymore held a special place in my heart as it embarked on a truly unique sonic journey. With the deep joy of collaborating with other artists, similar to my previous project Electronica, I wanted to create a new perspective on my music. I reached out to musicians who I believed would add a fascinating dimension to each track with their diverse talents. Oxymoreworks is a testament to the art of collaboration, a vibrant collection of musical dialogues’. ‘Oxymore’ was released in October 2022. Conceptually, it is his most ambitious and groundbreaking album to date, and the first commercial release of this scale to fully utilize multichannel and binaural sound (spatial 3D). Jarre produced, composed, recorded and mixed in 360-degree audio at Radio France’s ‘Innovation’ studios.

BMG proudly presents the 50th anniversary reissue of Les granges brûlées, an original soundtrack written and performed by Jean-Michel Jarre shortly after his work experience at G.R.M (Groupe de Recherches Musicales).

Probably one the first ever electronic music score, recorded with very scanty means: a VCS3 synthesizer, a Farsifa organ and three synchronized Revox tape recorders. Director Jean Chapot, who understood immediately the interest in the gap between this hyper classical rural thriller and this groundbreaking music, let Jarre absolutely free to compose. Built up around several melodic leitmotifs, the score of Les granges brûlées allowed Jarre to pursue his personal research: to bridge the gap between experimental music and pop music.

The reissue features bonus track “Happiness Is a Sad Song”, composed during Jarre’s time at the G.R.M. in 1971.

“Aphex Twin told me once that the original soundtrack of Les granges brûlées was one of his favorite records.”
– Jean-Michel Jarre
