He was born in Vitry-le-François and received his musical training at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he won first prize in music history, and the Salzburg Mozarteum.

Jean-François Paillard leads his chamber orchestra in this reference recording of Couperin’s “Les Nations”. “Les Nations” is a vast project in which the virtues of both the French and Italian styles are set next to each other. Each of the four ordres celebrates a Catholic power of Europe – France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire and the Savoy dynasty of Piedmont – and each is a combination of an Italianate trio sonata with its free-form virtuosity and a large-scale and elaborate French dance suite.

Honegger: The Symphony No. 2 for strings and trumpet by Arthur Honegger was commissioned in 1937 by Paul Sacher to mark the tenth anniversary of the chamber orchestra Basler Kammerorchester. Progress was slow, however, in part due to the interruption of the Second World War. The music is primarily for strings alone and is very turbulent and troubled until the trumpet soloist enters near the end of the music, giving this mostly tragic work a hopeful ending.

Jean-François Paillard has been a pillar of Erato’s history since its foundation in 1953. This box includes all orchestral and chamber music, as well as the concerto recordings done during Paillard’s collaboration with Erato between 1953 and 1984. With his musicological and researcher background, Paillard was one of the world’s pioneers in early music and has been instrumental in making it known to a wide audience.
