The companion to 2021’s Macon (as in his hometown), Jason Aldean’s tribute to his home state—and there’s plenty of personalized nostalgia that does what country music does at its best: feel universal, even when you’ve never lived anything like it. Aldean is a master at writing and choosing songs that encapsulate a cinematic version of what people expect from a country song. “Whiskey Me Away” finds him chasing away his loneliness with a stranger in a “long-lost highway town” bar, throwing quarters in a jukebox to “play some old-school Alabama.” He remembers past summers with a preacher’s daughter on “Holy Water,” commemorating her airbrushed T-shirt and bumper-car rides (bonus points for rhyming “heaven” and “Destin,” as in the budget-Spring-Break Florida town).

Jason Aldean – They Don’t Know (2016)

Never the liveliest of country singers, Jason Aldean settles into his slow stride on 2016’s They Don’t Know, his seventh studio set. Facing the onset of his forties, Aldean chooses to pivot off of the smoldering moments of 2014’s Old Boots, New Dirt, a slow-churning intensity achieved partially through a sly adoption of electronic rhythms. On They Don’t Know, Aldean largely strips away such nods toward modernity, adding some loops to lead track (and lead single) “Lights Come On,” an ode toward hitting a big country concert at the end of a hard work week — a number designed as a rocker but proceeding at the same deliberate tempo as the power ballads that dominate the album, including “When the Lights Go Out,” which cleverly closes They Don’t Know. Often, the question of rocking hinges on a matter of volume: the party songs are slightly louder due to the preponderance of guitars, not due to quicker rhythms or any suggestion of chaos. By marching all 15 songs to the same deliberate beat, Aldean winds up creating the illusion that he’s running in place; each track bleeds into the next, distinguished perhaps by a few more or a few less acoustic guitars or, on “First Time Again,” the presence of Kelsea Ballerini as a duet partner, but usually seeming as if they’re cut from the same cloth. It’s comfortable ground for Aldean and, strikingly, he sounds comfortable too, never singing with an audible scowl. He seems settled in his skin, knowing he’s at his best in a maudlin minor key, and that shift is welcome even if it accidentally accentuates just how slowly They Don’t Know plods. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Two-time, reigning and current ACM “Entertainer of the Year” nominee Jason Aldean returns with his eighth studio album, Rearview Town. Joining forces with longtime producer Michael Knox, the risks and their rewards electrify the 15 new tracks snaking between stadium-sized guitar anthems, heartfelt country minimalism and hip-hop swagger. “It’s about putting things behind you…things that have held you down…and looking ahead,” said Aldean of the album’s title track. “When you look at my career and the personal experiences I’ve gone through, it really seemed like a fitting title for this record and it’s one of the best songs I’ve ever recorded. It was important to me to pick songs that have substance to them, I’m more conscious of that these days.” Long a maestro of up-tempo stompers, Aldean kicks off Rearview Town with “Dirt to Dust” and “Set It Off,” an epic one-two punch of dirty guitars and undeniable hooks with razor-sharp production. Heading for traditional country on the standout lost love lament “Drowns the Whiskey” featuring Miranda Lambert, the track is remarkably understated in its arrangement, but it’s saturated in well-worn emotions. On “Better At Being Who I Am,” Aldean lends a nuanced, knowing delivery to the breakup tale. Occasionally like on lead single, “You Make It Easy,” he even finds himself channeling the blues. But for all its sonic diversity, Rearview Town is indelibly cohesive. It’s Aldean’s lifelong love of country country music and country life that ties it all together.

Jason Aldean, dropped his latest album Macon, the first part of his anticipated new double album that will be complete with next year’s release of Georgia.

The “Got What I Got” artist took to Instagram on Friday (November 12) to announce that the 15-track album, his first since 2019’s 9, is finally out, telling fans to “turn it up.” He also shared that the second part of the double album, which also has 15 songs, will drop April 22.
