On her excellent 2023 release, The Last Quiet Place, she is joined by violinist Mazz Swift, cellist Tomeka Reid, guitarist Brandon Seabrook, bassist Michael Formanek, and drummer Tom Rainey.

Jazz as the art of dialogue: two of the great musicians of today’s jazz from different continents and generations make music sparkle.

Born in Osaka in 1948, Aki Takase moved to Berlin where her musical partners included Han Bennink, evan Parker, Rudi Mahall, David Murray, Louis Sclavis and Fred Frith as well as her husband and pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach.

Ingrid Laubrock, born in 1970 in Stadlohn in North Rhine-Westphalia, moved to London at the age of 19 where she studied with the saxophonists Jean Toussaint and Dave Liebman. She has lived in Brooklyn since 2008. In her publications she shows a wide musical spectrum ranging from the quintet AntiHouse to the orchestral recordings of “Contemporary Chaos Practices” from 2018.
“Ingrid is one of my favorite saxophonists,” says Aki Takase. “She is a talented player with a lot of technique, very creative, smart and above all I love her dedicated approach to making music”. And Ingrid Laubrock says about Aki Takase: “It feels great to play with Aki. She’s so unique and the feeling of serious playfulness and communication I’m looking for musically is there immediately”.
The album Kasumi presents wonderful dialogues, which radiate joy, wit and warmth or hold the breath in silent intensity, so as not to break the spell.

The double album Dreamt Twice, Twice Dreamt follows Ingrid Laubrock’s landmark orchestral album Contemporary Chaos Practices from 2018.

On Dreamt Twice, Twice Dreamt Laubrock presents five compositions in double version. On the first CD, the EOS Chamber Orchestra Cologne interprets Laubrock’s compositions. The soloists are Cory Smythe (piano), Sam Pluta (electronics), Robert Landfermann (bass), Tom Rainey (drums) and Ingrid Laubrock (saxophone). On the second album of the double album, a filigree ensemble based around the core trio of Ingrid Laubrock, Cory Smythe, Sam Pluta and guests Adam Matlock, Josh Modney and Zeena Parkins play the same five compositions.

When Brandon Lopez, a New Yorker with Puerto Rican roots, joined the duo of saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock and drummer Tom Rainey, this wasn’t simply about adding a plus one to the Laubrock – Rainey duo. Thanks to the young bassist (born 1988), already collaborating with musicians from Dave Liebman via Zeena Parkins to John Zorn, a new dynamic has formed involving all three. In this triangular constellation a different balance is achieved and an altered play of energies. They are clearly on the same wavelength, with a similar sense and understanding of overarching form, inner structure, timing, feeling, energy, density, transparency and volume.

“Right from the first note the chemistry between them was right. The interplay between the three worked so effortlessly and naturally it bordered on telepathy. The three want to keep up the momentum and capture the magic moment,” writes Christoph Wagner in the liner notes.
