As its name suggests, “Everywhere / Anywhere /” Hugo Barriol’s new album was recorded everywhere. In his van, on a road trip between Morocco, Spain and Portugal at the end of 2022; between his Parisian apartment and his hotel room in Dubai, or in a friend’s studio or in the kitchen of his mother’s house, Hugo offers us an album which calls to travel and which touches us by its sincerity and its power. Always accompanied by his guitar, Hugo explores and mixes this time electronic and folk sounds with more synthesizers, horns, piano and cords. “I put in this album everything I wanted, everything the songs needed to be as close as possible to my vision and to themselves”. Influenced and nourished by the strength of Florence and the machine, the sweetness of the Lumineers and the genius of Bon Iver, Hugo creates his own universe, a fusion of new folk and pop.

Recorded in London with the producer Ian Grimble (Daughter, Mumford and Sons, Bear’s Den) at Church’s Studio, between the high walls of a church where Mass is held every Sunday, Yellow was born, song after song. Starting with “Oh My,” a thrilling opening track evoking the toxicity of bad encounters, and moving on to “Million Years,” born during an outdoor getaway, and “Always,” inspired by the passing of a travel loving friend and the fragility of existence, the 12 songs follow each other in a beautiful sequence, cultivating the folk and acoustic sound of Hugo, who wants to bring “light, color, warmth” to his melancholy. His goal is to deliver his life experiences with sincerity without losing the unifying and lively potential of rhythm.
