Milan Records will release the official soundtrack album for the biblical drama Mary Magdalene. The album features the film’s original music composed by Hildur Guðnadóttir (Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Strong Island) and Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival, The Theory of Everything, Sicario, Prisoners). The soundtrack will be released digitally overseas, March 23. Mary Magdalene is directed by Garth Davis (Lion) and stars Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim. The movie tells the story of Mary, a young woman in search of a new way of living, who defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth and soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem. The drama was released in several European markets earlier this month. No word yet on a domestic release date.

Hildur Guðnadóttir has composed the music for the TV series Chernobyl, a co-production between HBO and Sky. Written by Craig Mazin, the five-part miniseries dramatizes the true story of one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history — the April 26, 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in then – Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic — and tells of the brave men and women who sacrificed to save Europe from unimaginable disaster. The project is currently in production, with a cast including Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson and Jared Harris. Hildur has recently composed music for feature film Sicario: Day Of The Soldado, scheduled for release in June 2018, and collaborated with the late Jóhann Jóhannsson on the score for Garth Davis’s Mary Magdalene.

Based on the novel by Miriam Toews, writer/director Sarah Polley’s new narrative Women Talking considers how a group of women can move forward after the shocking betrayal and abuse by men in their isolated religious community. The backstory of the novel and subsequent film, which is set in 2010, mirrors horrific true events that took place at a Mennonite colony in Bolivia. For over four years, nine men secretly sedated over a hundred girls and women, raping them while they were unconscious. The film is not a violent one, however. Polley wanted the violence to only be reflected in short glimpses of the aftermath, focusing instead on the community of women coming together to build a better world for their children, each other, and themselves. Toews’ book raised questions within her about faith, forgiveness, community, and self-determination, she said. “I wanted to feel in every frame the endless potential and possibility contained in a conversation about how to remake a broken world.” Bringing this conversation to life is an exceptional ensemble cast that includes Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivy, and Frances McDormand.

Hildur Gudnadóttir’s first and exciting new film project after her Golden Globe, Grammy and Academy Award-winning ‘Joker’ score and Emmy and Grammy-winning soundtrack for the HBO hit-mini-series ‘Chernobyl’. The film, set in the international world of classical music, centers on the fictional character Lydia Tar (Cate Blanchett), widely considered one of the greatest living composers/conductors and first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra. ‘TAR’ marks a reemergence for director Todd Field, who made his directorial debut in 2001 with the critically acclaimed ‘In My Bedroom’, which earned five Oscar nominations, including best picture. The ‘TAR’ soundtrack is a concept album with music from and inspired by the motion picture including works by Mahler, Elgar, Gudnadóttir and more. Alongside Hildur Gudnadóttir the soundtrack will also feature Cate Blanchett conducting a rehearsal of Mahler’s 5th symphony and 20 year old British-German cellist Sophie Kauer.
