Even though I probably don’t need anymore Vivaldi CDs, I couldn’t pass up getting this title in the Amazon Marketplace for a penny plus shipping. This first generation disc from DG’s ” Musikfest” series presents conductor Herbert Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmoniker performing seven of Vivaldi’s Concerti (RVs 129, 151, 169, 234, 271, 439 & 523), originally released in 1971. Karajan wasn’t necessarily celebrated for his Vivaldi, but how can you pass on the world’s best sounding orchestra at the height of its powers, performing musical ear candy – you simply cannot. Period instrument purists may not agree with that assessment, but they’ll have to speak up, the volume’s on 10 for this one!

“I have written before about the special distinction of Karajan’s recordings of the Schumann symphonies (which are unsurpassed in the present catalogue) when discussing the coupling of the Rhenish with Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony in April. The Spring is no exception: it is as fresh as it should be, beautifully paced, and the playing of the Berlin Philharmonic is magnificent. The digitally remastered sound is drier than the original but on the whole is very successful; the bright-eyed quality suits the music. A most enjoyable disc.” (Ivan March, Gramophone)

“Karajan’s interpretations of the Schumann Symphonies stand above all other modern readings.” (Penguin Guide)

Karajan does it again. The Prokofiev 5th is another of the great conductor’s famous recordings. He labored for years, refining and perfecting his interpretation of this perennial favorite. It’s one of the most played of 20th-century symphonies. Unlike many other works, Karajan recorded this symphony just once and he got everything right the first time. It’s my experience with Karajan that when the man records only once, it’s usually quite an accomplishment. Check out his lone recordings of Richard Strauss’ Sinfonia Domestica and Alpine Symphony or Mahler’s Fifth to know just how masterful Karajan can be when he zeroes in and makes a near perfect record of a piece of music. This Prokofiev 5th is in that elite class. The beautiful strings of the Berlin Philharmonic, the swirling woodwinds and the breathtaking cymbal crashes at the end of the first movement in particular are just some of the icing on the cake. Amazing performance, no doubt.

“Karajan recorded the Fourth Symphony three times, once in the 1950s with the Philharmonia and twice with the Berlin Philharmonic. The work obviously meant a great deal to him. He insisted on its inclusion in his very first concert on his appointment at the Berlin Philharmonic in the mid-1950s at a time when Sibelius’s cause had few champions in Germany, so keen was he to stake its claim as one of the great symphonies of the day. Karajan’s account has withstood the test of time as one of the most searching, profound and concentrated performances of this masterpiece, and its reappearance at mid price was very welcome. The Seventh is finer than his earlier Philharmonia version but doesn’t enjoy quite the same classic status. Karajan’s Valsetriste is wonderfully seductive. Indispensable!” (Gramophone Classical Music Guide)

Herbert von Karajan’s 1976 rendition of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor, “Choral,” Op. 125, has had its advocates over the years, and many think this is his best version of the symphony. Even so, others more skeptical may find that this performance is too carefully contrived to show off the Berlin Philharmonic’s exceptional chops; that the recording is too fastidiously engineered to pick up every last instrumental passage, important or not; and that the whole package is marketed too pointedly as a “great performance,” which it is not. If sharpness of gesture and potency of force define Karajan’s interpretation, along with a ruthless attention to details that seems almost fetishistic, then listeners who like his driven yet hyper-meticulous style will find all they desire in this recording. But if they suppose this performance has any subtlety, grace, majesty, eloquence, mystery, or ecstasy, then they only imagine it, because this is about as mechanical, forced, sterile, and calculated as a reading of the Ninth can get. Whether it’s because the first movement sounds too obsessively precise (you can practically count the notes in the unnaturally highlighted tremolos), the Scherzo comes off as too ferocious and choppy, or the Adagio merely goes through the motions without revealing any of its beauty, this might yet seem like an acceptable, if not especially attractive or endearing, performance that delivers the basics without much emotion. But the Finale is where the whole effort is undermined, simply through a lack of inspiration. Every note is where it should be, the orchestra is crystal clear, the vocal quartet is solid, and the Wiener Singverein is impressive, but the movement doesn’t come together in any unified expression of joy, either earthly or cosmic. Instead of instilling awe or rapture, this stiffly paced and hard-edged reading is devoid of feeling and induces only boredom, since everything is so brutally hammered out. Deutsche Grammophon’s boosted sound is upfront and in your face, so there is no chance you’ll miss a note of this heavy-handed presentation. – Review by Blair Sanderson

The Karajan Official Remastered Edition comprises 13 box sets containing official remasterings of the finest recordings the Austrian conductor made for EMI between 1946 and 1984, and which are now a jewel of the Warner Classics catalogue.

For many, Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) – hailed early in his career as ‘Das Wunder Karajan’ (The Karajan Miracle) and known in the early 1960s as ‘the music director of Europe’ – remains the ultimate embodiment of the maestro. The release of the Karajan Official Remastered Edition over the first half of 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the conductor’s death in July 1989 at the age of 81.

He was closely associated with EMI for the majority of his recording career (specifically from 1946 to 1960 and then again from 1969 to 1984). EMI’s legendary producer Walter Legge sought him out in Vienna just after World War II and the long relationship that ensued embraced recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic, the Philharmonia (the orchestra founded by Legge), the Berlin Philharmonic (of which Karajan became ‘conductor for life’ in 1955), the forces of La Scala, Milan, and the Orchestre de Paris.

The Karajan Official Remastered Edition will feature primarily symphonic and choral music. The entire edition will comprise recordings remastered from the original sources in 24-bit/96kHz at Abbey Road Studios, the world’s most renowned recording studio.

The phenomenal rise to fame of the conductor Herbert von Karajan is linked indissolubly with the name of Beethoven. He first reached the heights in 1937, when he was Aachen’s General Musical Director (still under thirty years of age, he was the youngest man in Germany to hold such a post), by directing a memorable performance of Fidelio in Berlin. Another landmark in his career is the present complete recording of Beethoven’s nine symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, a series among which the presentation of the ‘Eroica’ is a greatly admired achievement in its own right. The Berlin Philharmonic is undoubtedly Karajan’s orchestra: in 1956, after the death of Wilhelm Furtwängler and an American tour, which Karajan conducted with outstanding brilliance, the orchestra unanimously appointed him artistic director for life. Under his conductorship the orchestra has achieved great triumphs and has deeply moved its listeners both in Berlin and on innumerable national and international tours, above all, perhaps, in performances of the ‘Eroica’ and the other outstanding symphonies of Beethoven (From the original LP notes, 1963)
