Two laidback gems from Henry Mancini – back to back on a single CD! Six Hours Past Sunset is moody and mellow – and perfect for late nite listening! The album has the tinkling piano of Mancini set over lush orchestrations – breezy, yet dark at the same time, outwardly simple, but filled with complex riffing and sophisticated washes of color and emotion. The larger group features a few horn soloists, but the real focus is on Mancini’s piano – which peppers each track with sprinkles of sound, darting in and out of the more complicated arrangements. Titles include “Traces”, “Midnight Cowboy”, “Two For The Road”, “Didn’t We”, “Six Hours Past Sunset”, and “Theme From The Fox”. Warm Shade Of Ivory is lovely late nite Mancini! The album has Mr. M’s tinkling piano set amidst dark moody arrangements that bank the piano in warm washes of strings and light lilting rhythms – all moving at a slow somber pace that’s perfect for a summer night with the lights down low, the windows open, relaxing in a big easy chair with a drink while the breeze and the sounds of the summer waft over the room. The record is subtle, but a wonderful example of Mancini’s continuing instrumental genius. Titles include “Watch What Happens”, “Day In The Life Of A Fool”, “Cycles”, “Meditation”, “When I Look In Your Eyes”, and “Moment To Moment”.

Two cool Henry Mancini album – one soundtrack, and one sweet set of instrumentals! Return Of The Pink Panther is a surprisingly groovy record – and one that’s very different from the original Pink Panther soundtrack. Symphonic Soul is one of Henry Mancini’s grooviest LPs from the 70s – a mixture of tight large arrangements with a smooth funky edge, similar to some of his best soundtrack work at the time. The rhythm section is great – with Harvey Mason on drums and Joe Sample on keyboards, and guitar by David T Walker and Dennis Budimir – and the album also features some cool solos on instruments like African finger piano and piccolo trumpet.

This is easy listening Henry Mancini, not jazzy “Peter Gunn” Henry Mancini, but darn good easy listening. As with the other Vocalion surround Mancini releases, what really makes this worth the listen is the nicely balanced surround mix. There are no gimmicks. Surround is used here to spread out the music and give it depth, which makes it perfect for easy listening (and perhaps, an accompanying martini at the end of a hectic day).

Coming off a double Oscar win for his Breakfast at Tiffany’s score, Henry Mancini produced this score for the Howard Hawks-directed, John Wayne-starring safari comedy. This is at first a fun blend of jazz and Afro-exotica, jungle drums mixed with a classic bop combo. Elsewhere, however, the soundtrack opts for some pleasant, but very Western jazz, only stopping for the African instrument-sampler “The Sounds of Hatari,” which features some nice treated piano. The filmmakers were probably hoping that the Mercer and Carmichael song “Just for Tonight” would be as much a success as Tiffany’s “Moon River,” but if Hatari! is memorable for anything, it’s for the incredibly goofy “Baby Elephant Walk,” which has gone on to be infamous musical shorthand for kookiness of any stripe. Get this tune in your head and it sticks. – Ted Mills

Henry Mancini’s adventurous score for the 1962 thriller Experiment in Terror is one of the composer’s many classic collaborations with director Blake Edwards. Released a year after Breakfast at Tiffany’s and a year before The Pink Panther, it’s a must for any level of Mancini collector, not because it’s so representative of his work at the time but because it’s extra quirky and diverse with jazzy lounge pieces, melancholy piano, and eerie suspense passages, as well as guitar rock (“Golden Gate Twist”) and even a nod to the flapper era with the “Charleston”-like “The Good Old Days.” The score was recorded earlier that year at RCA Victor’s Music Center of the World by Henry Mancini & His Orchestra.

The film is set mostly in the wake of World War II, and follows an Italian woman named Giovanna (Sophia Loren) as she searches across Russia for any trace of her vanished husband, Antonio (Marcello Mastroianni). What she discovers will change her life forever. At the time he was asked to score SUNFLOWER, Henry Mancini was already a film music legend. His unforgettable melodies for directors Blake Edwards and Stanley Donen had brought him international renown. For this film, Mancini produced one of his most beautiful and dramatic scores. Its twin love themes, capturing the rich flavors of both Italy and Russia, are exquisitely balanced between romantic longing and painful melancholy, while powerful themes for the characters’ journeys add depth and pathos. SUNFLOWER earned Mancini an Academy Award nomination for Best Music, Original Score, and inspired the hit song “Loss of Love,” with lyrics by Bob Merrill. It was especially successful in Japan, where Mancini’s celebrity rose to new heights.

Just one in a long line of Mancini’s excellent ’60s soundtracks. This time out he’s back scoring another of Blake Edwards’ comedies, The Party. Featuring a Hollywood producer’s cocktail party and one hapless Indian actor (Peter Sellers) who is mistakenly invited, the movie called for plenty of lounge slickness and some romping interludes. Enter Henry Mancini and his usual bag of almost-transcendent vibe and strings jazz and mod swingers. And tagging along are such Mancini veterans and class players as tenor saxophonist Plas Johnson, pianist Jimmy Rowles, and drummer Shelly Manne. Pity, then, that instead of the lovely Claudine Longet vocal turn on “Nothing to Lose,” listeners only get the fine yet disappointing instrumental version. A minor quibble, really, in light of all the high-end booty to be had. – Stephen Cook

This soundtrack to the movie adaptation of Truman Capote’s novel Breakfast at Tiffany’s is one of Henry Mancini’s best. The pleasing blend of pop (the perennial “Moon River”) and swing stays fresh over the album’s 12 tracks and shows off Mancini’s considerable writing and arranging skills. The cuts range from the layered, big-band mambo “Something for Cat” to the transcendentally smooth lounge number “Sally’s Tomato” with some vaudeville moments coming via “Mr. Yunioshi” (check out that banjo eating up the faux Japanese scales) and “Hub Caps and Tail Lights” (sounds like the “Addams Family Theme”). Mancini keeps the lounge/easy listening mood from collapsing in on itself with many fine jazz solos, a driving rhythm section, and his expert (yet pleasantly cheesy) handling of the liquid-toned chorus parts. He also strikes a nice balance here between his crime-jazz backdrops for the Peter Gunn TV show and Touch of Evil and the later, more streamlined soundtracks for The Pink Panther and Charade. Throughout Breakfast at Tiffany’s solid program, Mancini makes it clear that he isn’t just a peddler of Muzak but a fine composer. The 2005 Japanese BMG reissue offers crisp remastering to audiophile standards, similar to what was done with Elvis Presley’s catalog in Japan – the results are startling, with exceptionally vivid textures throughout, but nowhere more so than on “Moon River,” where the opening quote of the central melody on the harmonica, the next instrumental verse picked up by the strings, and the third done by the chorus, all sound like they’re right in your lap. The whole album sounds that way, with the result that all of the musicianship and Mancini’s finely nuanced direction never seemed more up close and personal. – Stephen Cook

Mancini’s jazz influences are front an center here, walking a fine line between the hard-driving r&b-flavored hard bop and the unsentimental, laid-back cool jazz movements that were still very edgy in the late 1950s.
