Canada’s greatest contribution to country music, Hank Snow was famous for his “traveling” songs. It’s no wonder. At age 12 he ran away from his Nova Scotia home and joined the Merchant Marines, working as a cabin boy and laborer for four years. Once back on shore, he listened to Jimmie Rodgers records and started playing in public, building up a following in Halifax. His original nickname, the Yodelling Ranger, was modified to the Singing Ranger when his high voice changed to the great baritone that graced his hit records.

Hank Snow had three hits in 1965, but none of them are on Sings Your Favorite Country Hits. The album was aimed at Snow’s fans, who would happily consume his versions of recent hits and older favorites because they enjoyed his voice and were familiar with many, if not most, of the songs. The then-“current” hit songs (all from 1963) include “Six Days on the Road,” “Mary Ann Regrets,” and “From a Jack to a King,” while the oldies feature Marvin Rainwater’s “Gonna Find Me a Bluebird”; the ever-popular “White Silver Sands”; and Jimmy Dean’s first hit, “Bumming Around.” This kind of album package, consisting of a name artist covering well-known songs, was common in the ’60s, being easy to produce and a solid seller that pleased the artist’s followers. The absence of original material would be seen as a fault by many latter-day critics, but Sings Your Favorite Country Hits was created for a certain purpose and, in that regard, is a success.

Once back on shore, he listened to Jimmie Rodgers records and started playing in public, building up a following in Halifax. His original nickname, the Yodelling Ranger, was modified to the Singing Ranger when his high voice changed to the great baritone that graced his hit records. In 1950, the year he became an Opry regular, his self-penned “I’m Moving On” (the first of his many great traveling songs) became a smash hit, reaching number one and remaining there for 21 weeks. “Golden Rocket” (also 1950) and “I’ve Been Everywhere” (1962), two other hits, show his lifelong love for trains and travel. But he was as much at home with two other styles, the ballad and the rhumba/boogie. Among his many great ballads are “Bluebird Island” (with Anita Carter of the Carter Family), “Fool Such as I,” and “Hello, Love,” a hit when Snow was 60 years old. Snow appeared regularly on the Opry into the ’90s, proving that his incredible voice suffered no loss of quality over the last half-century, as well as what a tasteful, understated guitar stylist he is. With small stature and huge voice, Snow was a country traditionalist who gave much more to the business than he took.

During the latter half of the ’60s, Snow’s career slowed down considerably, as he wasn’t able to make the transition to the new, heavily orchestrated country-pop sounds, nor was he able to keep pace with the twangy roll of Bakersfield. Instead, his singles placed in the lower reaches of the charts, while his concerts and Grand Ole Opry appearances continued to be quite popular.

Clarence Eugene “Hank” Snow (May 9, 1914 – December 20, 1999) was a celebrated Canadian country music artist. In a career that spanned more than 50 years, he recorded 140 albums and charted more than 85 singles on the Billboard country charts from 1950 until 1980. His number-one hits include the self-penned songs “I’m Moving On”, “The Golden Rocket” and famous versions of “I Don’t Hurt Anymore”, “Let Me Go, Lover!”, “I’ve Been Everywhere”, “Hello Love”, as well as other top 10 hits.

Snow was an accomplished songwriter whose clear, baritone voice expressed a wide range of emotions including the joys of freedom and travel as well as the anguish of tortured love. His music was rooted in his beginnings in small-town Nova Scotia where, as a frail, 80-pound youngster, he endured extreme poverty, beatings and psychological abuse as well as physically punishing labour during the economically depressed 1920s and 1930s. Through it all, his musically talented mother provided the emotional support he needed to pursue his dream of becoming a famous entertainer like his idol, the country star, Jimmie Rodgers.

As a performer of traditional country music, Snow won numerous awards and is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The Hank Snow Museum in Liverpool, Nova Scotia celebrates his life and work in a province where his fans still see him as an inspirational figure who triumphed over personal adversity to become one of the most influential artists in all of country music.

Hank Snow deserves some kind of award for The Jimmie Rodgers Story. There are not many that can present Rodgers’ material with such an authentic quality.

All the songs on the album are bridged by the retrospectic narration of Albert Fullam.

Coached by the production of Chet Atkins, Snow consistently serves up powerful interpretations of “Waiting For a Train,” “Hobo Bill’s Last Ride,” “Nobody Knows But Me” and alot more.

It was the style of Jimmie Rodgers that had alot of influence on today’s artists – John Sebastian, John Kay and Jerry Garcia to mention a few…
