In his “Fantastic Symphony in Five Parts,” a literal translation of the composer’s final title, Berlioz tells a musical tale with himself as the central character – creating not only a mood (as in Liszt’s symphonic poems), but states of mind and precise, physical situations. Nothing like it had been attempted on this scale before.

Berlioz’s new concept of how far one could go in dramatic music without resorting to a vocal text once caused considerable polemicizing over whether such music was viable without reference to the “story.” Wagner’s great friend and champion, Eduard Dannreuther, took the negative tack: “The Symphonie fantastique, particularly its finale, is sheer nonsense when the hearer has no knowledge of the program.”

A truly breathtaking new recording from, quite simply, the most exciting and gifted young conductor of our times.

A rite of passage and true legacy project: Dudamel’s debut recording with the legendary Berlin Philharmonic.

Recorded live at the Philharmonie in Berlin, whose acoustics were designed expressly for the brilliant, luxurious tonalities of this late-romantic music.

Specially-commissioned conceptual album presentation, visuals and tools – all designed to appeal to a broad “discovery” audience. Epic, evocative and virtuosic, Richard Strauss’s beloved tone poem, Also sprach Zarathustra, was inspired by Nietzsche’s poem, and immortalised in Kubrick’s science-fiction cinema classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel are concert-hall favourites: ebullient, optimistic and filled with Straussian melodic and harmonic invention.

Gustavo Dudamel earned a “Best Orchestral Recording” Grammy® in 2012 for his recording of Brahms Symphony No. 4 with the LA Philharmonic and was named Musical America’s “Musician of the Year” for 2013.

Paris, December 2nd , 1804. In a grand ceremony at Notre-Dame-Cathedral, Napoleon Bonaparte crowns himself Emperor of France. Among the thousands in attendance at the coronation that day was a young man named Simon Bolivar. At once impressed and reviled, the young South American’s mind was gripped by a new vision for the future of his homeland. Meanwhile, as news of Napoleon’s coronation reached Vienna, an enraged Ludwig van Beethoven dashed the hand-written dedication to Bonaparte from the manuscript of his latest symphony. The work would be known as the “Eroica”, and the history of music would never be the same.

With this recording project, my brothers and sisters of the Simon Bolviar Symphony Orchestra and I pay homage to two of our greatest inspirations: Beethoven and Bolivar. Two bold, passionate visionaries whose parallel lives straddled the transition from the Enlightenment to the revolutionary Romantic eras, who came of age in the shadow of Napoleon, and went on to dominate the cultural consciousness of their time. Bolivar led millions of South Americans to freedom and became the spiritual father of nations; Beethoven championed the emancipation of art from the sphere of the aristocracy and, in his symphonies, established the compositional and philosophical vocabulary for all music thereafter.

To realise their goals, both Bolivar and Beethoven overcame tremendous challenges. Bolivar faced colonial armies, survived political intrigues, and suffered personal tragedy, but never lost faith in his vision. Beethoven lost his hearing – perhaps the most cruel fate to befall a musician. And yet, he was able to compose music of such extraordinary humanity and compassion, he is living proof of the ability of musical expression to transcend circumstance. This belief, in the transcendent, transformative power of music, is fundamental to the philosophy of El Sistema. As Venezuelans, we feel the living spirit of Bolivar all around us every day. And for us, especially in the Simon Bolivar orchestra, we identify with Beethoven’s spirit and with his music because the two contemporaries, Beethoven and Bolivar, shared the same ideals of freedom and sacrifice. We stand on the shoulders of giants. Just as Bolivar’s words and deeds inspired his countrymen and women to strive for greater causes, Beethoven’s symphonies lead us on a journey to discover our deepest human emotions – and aspire to our highest ideals. It is our great honour and pleasure to share in this journey with you. —Gustavo Dudamel

This 2017 concert, on the market by the end of the second week in January, marked the first Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert led by the sensational Venezuelan-American conductor Gustavo Dudamel. Those hoping, or fearing, that he would shake up the repertory of this Vienna institution, are given little material to work with; the program follows the time-honored pattern, with the Strauss family in the foremost position and The Beautiful Blue Danube in its proper place in the encores. This said, Dudamel’s New Year’s Concert is fresh and energetic, and really a great deal of fun. The Viennese audience rewards him with warm applause and as much enthusiasm as Viennese can muster. He introduces quite a few pieces that are new to the concert, closing out the first half with the utterly charming Pepita-Polka, Op. 138, an unjustly neglected masterpiece of Johann Strauss II. There are no fewer than four Johann II premieres, and among the other newcomers is the familiar Skaters’ Waltz (Les Patineurs) of Emile Waldteufel. In the main Strauss pieces, Dudamel applies his high-energy but precise sound to this highly familiar material, and lo and behold it works: there are foot-tappers galore, but the characteristic Strauss humor is not lost. Sample the Rotunde-Quadrille, Op. 360, of Johann II for an idea, and note that the sound quality on the New Year’s Concert release gets just a little better each year. The New Year’s Concert, far from being a moribund tradition, is a growing phenomenon, broadcast as far afield as Indonesia and Mozambique. With satisfying performances like these, that trend seems likely to continue. ~~ Review by James Manheim

John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary, first performed in 2012 in Los Angeles, is something of an expansion on the composer’s El Niño, a Passion story adorned with a variety of contemporary themes and musical materials. Like the earlier work, it features a libretto by longtime Adams collaborator Peter Sellars, and it may be sung on-stage as an oratorio or presented as an opera. Mary Magdalene is indeed a central figure in the work, but actually it is more than the trick perspective the title might imply; as with El Niño Sellars incorporates such devices as set pieces featuring poetry by other writers (this time poet Louise Erdrich plays the central role). Jesus seems to appear as through a prism, embodied by a trio of countertenors: a typical Adams masterstroke. Bach’s Passions are obvious antecedents, but Andrew Clements of the London Guardian has accurately pointed out a resemblance to a work by a composer not much mentioned in the same breath as Adams: Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. The music has similar ambitions and a similar way, although not so extreme, of veering off into contemporary vernacular materials according to the text. This doesn’t suit Adams perfectly, although he takes steps, including a recurring use of the cimbalom, to tie all his diverse materials together. At any rate, the work is never boring and often absorbing; the enthusiasm of conductor Gustavo Dudamel, the vocal performers, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra for the material is palpable; and this sprawling score is clearly recorded. Time will tell whether concert-music big events like this one will have staying power, but there’s a lot to chew on here for anyone with the slightest liking for Adams and his democratic, synoptic musical world.
