“The Hole” is the eighteenth studio album by Dutch legends Golden Earring and was released in May 1986. It contains their top ten hit “Quiet Eyes” and the artwork was designed by none other than photographer, film and music video director Anton Corbijn (U2, Depeche Mode, Miles Davis, Bruce Springsteen and others).

Golden Earring’s band archivist, Wouter Bessels, has remastered the record from the original master tapes for the first time ever and added two versions of “Gimme a Break” as bonus tracks to this fantastic re-release.

After the 1976 album “Contraband,” Golden Earring continued their straightforward hard rock style on “Grab It For A Second” (1978). In collaboration with legendary producer Jimmy Iovine (U2, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Stevie Nicks, Dire Straits, Patti Smith), this album was the band’s last with guitarist Eelco Gelling. This 45th anniversary edition of “Grab It For A Second” has been remastered from the original master tapes for the first time and includes the bonus track “I Can’t Talk Now” (B-side of the 7-inch single “Movin’ Down Life”).

Golden Earring has been around since 1961 and the current lineup includes founding members George Kooymans (vocals and guitar) and Rinus Gerritsen (bass, keyboard), as well as Barry Hay (vocals, guitar, flute and saxophone), who has been a member since 1968, and Cesar Zuiderwijk (drums), who has been a member since 1970. They have had over 40 hits and 30 albums, many of which have reached either gold or platinum status in their home country, the Netherlands.

After spending much of the late ’70s and the early ’80s as a cult band, Golden Earring returned to an international level of popularity in 1982 with the hit single (and popular MTV attraction) “Twilight Zone.” This song and seven others are featured on Cut, a solid album that found Golden Earring starting to deviate from the pop/rock formula they perfect on No Promises…No Debts and Prisoner of the Night. Like those albums, Cut works its way through a series of guitar-based rock songs built on strong hooks. However, the band allows themselves to instrumentally stretch out a bit on some of the songs this time out. The most notable example is the midsection of “Twilight Zone,” where George Kooymans lays out an exploratory series of guitar solos that build to crescendo over the taut bassline provided by Rinus Gerritsen. The other songs on Cut aren’t as tightly crafted and hook-laden as those on the last few albums, but there are still plenty of strong tracks: “Baby Dynamite” is a power ballad about a fame-seeking girl that is built on a nicely harmonized chorus and “Lost and Found” is a strong mid-tempo rumination on the end of a relationship that boasts an impassioned yet subtle vocal performance from Barry Hay. However, the best non-“Twilight Zone” track on the album is the least typical: “The Devil Made Me Do It” is a witty, fast-paced pop-rocker about love gone bad built on an eccentric but effective combination of mock-gospel call and response vocals and an energetic horn section. Some of the tracks fall short of the mark (“Future” runs a decent riff into the ground by failing to develop it in an interesting way), but the album contains enough strong tracks to make it worth a listen for the Golden Earring fan.

Founded in 1961 by George Kooymans and Rinus Gerritsen, Dutch rock band Golden Earring (or Golden Earrings, until 1969) started off as a beatband, experimented as a psychedelic quartet and finally became a heavy rock group. Their ninth album Moontan (1973) hit the international album charts and is the band’s most successful album in the United States, being the only Golden Earring album to be certified Gold by the RIAA.

Golden Earring’s last performance ever was held at the Rotterdam Ahoy on 16th November 2019. By accident, visual director Marcel de Vré (who had captured the Golden Earring Five Zero Show at the Amsterdam Ziggodome in 2015) recorded that final performance. He was hired to take care of the video content and live camera shots that would be projected on a big video screen hanging on the back of the stage. Without the band being aware, De Vré recorded the show and archived the complete footage. Luckily, excellent audio and video was available of a tremendous concert, that sadly turned out to be Golden Earring’s final performance – with this historical release as a result. When in February 2021 co-founder George Kooymans had to announce his having to leave the band with immediate effect, due to health issues. Golden Earring decided to break up. With the sad knowledge that the Rotterdam show had been the final performance of Golden Earring, the audio and visual files were unshelved in close cooperation with the band, Marcel de Vré and John Sonneveld – the band’s long time technical assistance and producer. The artwork – based on an idea by Barry Hay – includes a replica of the original concert poster, but also features a collage of photos that fans of Golden Earring submitted during the past year.
