Ida Lupino is a fresh and creative album, distinguished by deep listening and focused interaction. At its centre is the remarkable improvisational rapport of two Italian musicians – pianist Giovanni Guidi and trombonist Gianluca Petrella. Their musical understanding – already apparent to listeners who heard them in Enrico Rava’s band – has been further refined in a widely-travelled duo which seeks encounters with fellow improvisers. “Our duo work is really defined by our collaboration with other artists,” Guidi says. The present album both builds on established relationships and the stimulus of new encounters as they are joined by – in Petrella’s words – “two masters of contemporary jazz who are really on our wavelength”.

The world of jazz is coming alive again after a long, locked-down slumber, and nothing confirms that it has survived the pandemic with energy and heart than the fifth CAM JAZZ release by Italian pianist and composer Giovanni Guidi. Ojos De Gato is a rousing set of anthemic new compositions that have the beguiling characteristic of seeming familiar but also utterly new. With a powerful band around him – tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, trombonist Gianluca Petrella, bassist Brandon Lopez and drummers Chad Taylor and Francisco Mela – he commands a sound that can be as powerful as a full orchestra or as intimate as the smallest combo. The music touches many destinations that have featured in Guidi’s life and imagination, but that can only have been visited virtually in the last year-plus: “Buenos Aires”, “Paris Last”, “Roma 1962”, “Caf’e Montmartre”. It’s a clich’e to refer to any artistic endeavour as a journey, but that’s what Ojos De Gato takes you on. Music in the spirit of the great Gato Barbieri, but in a new chapter. (Brian Morton)

Giovanni Guidi – Avec le temps (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/88,2kHz]

The Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi often says “The good teacher is the one that lets you stare out of the window daydreaming sometimes”. Those who have heard him perform alongside fellow musician Enrico Rava, who spotted his talent at the age of 12, or who have ever had the pleasure of listening to his music, will swiftly make the connection between this lovely little saying and his poetic piano playing. On the album Ida Lupino that he recorded for ECM in 2016 with Gianluca Petrella, Louis Sclavis and Gerald Cleaver, Guidi takes us on a beautiful and dreamlike journey and the lightness of his piano is just sublime. Three years later, Giovanni Guidi now leads a new group for his second album with Manfred Sicher’s label, consisting of tenor saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti, guitarist Roberto Cecchetto, double bass player Thomas Morgan and drummer João Lobo. Opening with the title track, Léo Ferré’s most famous song Avec le temps, is straight away a reminder of how popular music has shaped Guidi’s own music. Avec le temps is an album that takes its time; the improvisations are lengthy and the passages of inter-play are intense but a story flows from Guidi’s fingertips and through the keys and this time his four fellow players join him in telling it. This magnificent contemporary jazz opus is concluded with Tomasz, a moving personal tribute to the Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko who died in July 2018.
