For the first time, Bruckner’s Symphony No. 0 (“The Zeroth”) can now be heard in the interpretation by Nelsons and the Gewandhaus Orchestra.
Bruckner completed nine numbered symphonies (10 if the so-called Symphony No 0, ‘Die Nullte’, is included). The best known is probably Symphony No 7, first performed in Leipzig in 1884; the work includes in its scoring four Wagner tubas, instruments that were a newly developed cross between the French horn and tuba. Symphony No 4, ‘Romantic’, has an added programme—a diffident afterthought. All the symphonies, however, form an important element in late-19th-century symphonic repertoire.

“Bruckner’s music is in the Gewandhausorchester’s DNA,” says Andris Nelsons, the orchestra’s Music Director since 2018. Now their celebrated Bruckner symphony cycle in its unique combination with instrumental pieces from Wagner’s operas is complete. The idea for this was obvious to Nelsons: “Bruckner loved Wagner’s music: he saw its greatness, merits and achievements.” Since 2018, Symphonies Nos. 1-9 have been released on 1 or 2 CDs or digital album respectively, each release combining Bruckner with selected orchestral music by Wagner, underlining the references between the works. Released to celebrate his 70th birthday, Nelson Freire presents three landmark albums on the Decca label – the first in a brand new Beethoven Piano Concerto cycle begins with Piano Concerto No. 5, universally known as the “Emperor.”
This is the first recorded collaboration between the great Brazilian pianist and Italian maestro Riccardo Chailly and the Gewandhausorchester since their highly acclaimed Gramophone Recording of the Year, the two Brahms piano concertos, in 2007, which went on to win multiple awards.
The concerto is paired alongside the C minor Piano Sonata no. 32, the composer’s last.
This album will be simultaneously released with Radio Days in September, followed by a Chopin album including Piano Concerto No.2 and other solo gems in January 2015.

In 1970 Kurt Masur took over the direction of one of the best orchestras in Germany and the world: the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. The Creatures of Prometheus (German: Die Gesch”opfe des Prometheus), Op. 43, is a ballet composed in 1801 by Ludwig van Beethoven following the libretto of Salvatore Vigan`o. The ballet premiered on 28 March 1801 at the Burgtheater in Vienna and was given 28 performances. It was premiered in New York at the Park Theatre on 14 June 1808 being one of the first full length works by Beethoven to be performed in the United States. It is the only full length ballet by Beethoven.
The Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 36, is a symphony in four movements written by Ludwig van Beethoven between 1801 and 1802. The work is dedicated to Karl Alois, Prince Lichnowsky.

Following the ‘Gramophone Record of the Year’ award-winning set of the Brahms Symphonies, Riccardo Chailly turns his “rare talent for transforming music ripe for rediscovery” to Brahms’s Serenades. This exquisite recording renews these unjustly neglected and rarely performed works in performances of “trademark clarity” (Gramophone Record of the Year 2014) and marks the first Decca recording of these works since Kertesz in 1968.
Forming part of the wider Brahms project undertaken by Chailly and his Leipzig orchestra, this release restores an importance to these works which they rarely receive. In Chailly’s hands they emerge not just as precursors of the symphonies but powerful and individual works in their own right.

These symphonies were originally recorded for Philips in 1972 (Nos. 4, 5 & 7), 1973 (Nos. 3 & 6) and 1974 (Nos. 1, 2, 8 & 9). In general the readings are solid, middle-of-the-road affairs, with good sound for their day, but not up-close and as vivid as the state-of-recordings today. Probably the greatest strength of the set is its consistency of approach: Masur does not impose his personality on the music, preferring instead to present rather straightforward performances and let the music speak for itself. And, as we all know, this music can speak for itself quite boldly – listening after listening.
